Asymmetric warfare is very nasty thing, Taliban are currently teaching the US Army a bloody lesson in Afghanistan. The latest rumors have it that US troops have been ordered by General McChrystal to evacuate Nuristan province, apparently more lessons will follow soon.:D

for the spec ops taking over a ship without bringing harm to hostages is harder than doing it on a plane. these freighters are huge in size and have many compartments, its difficult to locate where the hostage and the pirates are from the outside, and the inside of the freighter is quite dark as well. its like urban ops, cept you are going through a million houses trying to find a bunch of hostages before the dude standing right behind them squeeze the trigger...

Maersk Alabama hijacking, a US ship. On Sunday, April 12, 2009, Capt. Richard Phillips was rescued, reportedly in good condition, from his pirate captors.[20][21] The commander of United States Fifth Fleet Vice Admiral William E. Gortney reported the rescue began when Commander Frank Castellano, captain of the Bainbridge, determined that Phillips' life was in imminent danger and ordered the action. President Barack Obama had previously given standing orders to take action if it was determined Phillips' life was in immediate danger.[22][23] [23] The Vice Admiral reported that U.S. Navy SEAL snipers, reportedly from SEAL Team Six,[24] on the Bainbridge's fantail opened fire and killed the three pirates remaining in the lifeboat with a simultaneous volley of three shots. The SEALs had arrived Friday afternoon after being parachuted into the water near the Halyburton, a guided missile frigate, which later joined with the Bainbridge.[5] At the time, the Bainbridge had the lifeboat under tow, approximately 25 to 30 yards astern.[25]

A fourth pirate, Abduhl Wal-i-Musi,[26] was aboard the USS Bainbridge negotiating a ransom and was taken into custody.[26] Teenage Abduhl Wal-i-Musi has been brought to New York to face trial on charges including piracy under the law of nations, conspiracy to seize a ship by force, conspiracy to commit hostage-taking, and firearms related charges.[27] The bodies of the three dead pirates were turned over by the US Navy to unidentified recipients in Somalia the last week of April 2009.[28]

My sources are Reuters, Tuesday October 20 2009 for the ship locations and Associated Press UNITED NATIONS (AP) Dec 17, 2008 for the UN resolution, where do your facts come from?

oct 20 is like less than a day after the fact, a lot of the info needs to be reconfirmed since then. mine was from the Chinese government on i believe the 23rd.

The situation with Maersk is very different from the current situation on the Chinese ship. First of all, there are only 3 pirates with 1 hostage being towed in open water. Whereas, in the Chinese situation, it's over 10 pirates on the ship with multiple hostages that the rescuers need to worry about. Also when the hostages/pirates are on the ship, it's much harder to snipe them. especially if everyone was below deck.

i was kinda expecting you to bring this up since you have revealed yourself to be somewhat of a die-hard US military cowboy fan.

which is why i said up there, boarding a ship is more difficult than hostage rescuing on a plane. the seals member took out the pirates on a LIFEBOAT. if they actually went up and into a freighter like the one in question, it could be mongadishu all over again...

with regards to that military leader political leader thing. the political leader is kinda like the regimental sergeant major in the western armies. i serve in the Canadian army so i dont know if they have it in the US army.

AND there was an armed pirate still back on the ship holding the other Americans hostage. The point is EVERY situation is different and military personnel have to adapt on the spot. American military personnel helped to design a situation that brought the three pirates out in a small boat to bait them with the promise of medical aid for a wounded pirate.

Don't tell me what's off topic here! The entire region between AfPak, the Gulf and the Bab Al Mandeb is one strategic entity and al-Qaeda and associates are on the ground in every corner there. No doubt many of the so called ´pirates´ have also some allegiance to extensive sunni terrorist networks eventually supporting bin Ladin.

Besides, you brought up the topic of ´asymmetric warfare´, implying that PLAN's small and limited detachment would not be able to deal adequately with that kind of challenge.

Incidentally pla101prc, I have reported you to the administrators for violation of the forum rules, namely personal attacks involving name calling. Incidentally, I know exactly where the firm is located in Phoenix, Arizona that is responsible for this site. I encourage free speech, but not when name calling and nationalistic taunts come to play.
