Faster pace of modernizing tanks

The ZTZ99 production actually wasnt that small.

As of 2013 we have at least 600 ZTZ99 in their different variants confirmed (ZTZ99-1, ZTZ99-2, and the new and heavy ZTZ99A), with more ZTZ99A (formerly known as ZTZ99A2 in fanboy-speak) being produced to equip heavy mechanized regiments in the Northern MRs.
Plus we have 2500 ZTZ96 series tanks in service with different units elsewhere in the country.

But people here are basically right: China is neglecting the armor modernization - there are still many vanilla ZTZ59 (original 100mm gun, no stabilizers, no night-vision) in service even with suppossedly elite mechanized and armor regiments facing North Korea.

The reason is simple: China is concentrating its PLA Ground Force spending not to replace its obsolete tanks, but on upgrading C4ISR, organic air-defenses, army aviation and mobile artillery. A Chinese mechanized division/brigade may be equipped with obsolete tanks, but they are increasingly seeing themselves being supported by digitalized self-propelled artillery, tactical UAVs, increasingly sophisticated air-defense systems (some of them are even suppossed to be equipped with AHEAD munitions capable of taking out guided ordnance in mid-air), networked command and control assets, and quasi GA organic attack helicopters like the Z-9WA, Z-10 and Z-19. The tanks are just a mere placeholder.

Yep, 600 Type 99 MBT is more than enough to interdict and repulse an American-led invasion of North Korea under a sham excuse of WMDs or spreading democracy, freedom, human rights, etc...

The Korean peninsula is the only situation where Chinese tanks need to be modernized in order to face K2 Panther MBT of ROK or the M1A2 MBT of American imperialists.

I don't agree that China is neglecting her armor modernization, my feeling is it's less apparent than upgrading capabilities C4ISR and attack choppers. In those more apparent fields like SP artillery, rotary wings and C4ISR, China didn't had much 2 decades ago, so when they roll out new equipment like the WZ-10 and the Z-19, even if it's her first indigenous generation, it's a huge step forward in our mind.

But she has been producing new tanks for a long time. I mean, they started with the Type 59 & 69, then they got the 80/85/88, then we saw the Type 90 and 96 coming out of the production lines and then the Type 98/99. In some case, there was huge leap between some of those MBT but we probably didn't perceived that way.

I'm convinced that the upcoming MBT-3000 will be replacing a lot of those older tanks

It actually has more than just an new engine. It has a new FCS, new navigation system and new information networking system, I did heard that it's the 1st fully digitalized MBT produced by China. According to some sources, there's also some slight improvement in the armor and the fire suppression system. The MBT-3000 is more than
