They are just simply growing pains that every new airplane goes through. The F-35 is after all an incredibly complex piece of machinery. These things meed to be put in perspective.

Take the F-16 as an example. The following account is from someone who had to deal with its growing pains in the early years.

There is an old rule in project management: there is no problem that can not be solved by using up more resources. ( $ )

Maybe these days the citizens of the USA prefer things like health care more than to have new fancy fighter jets.

Interesting, you don't know the trends ?

USA spending, as percentage of GDP :
    1981, Military : 6.567% , Healthcare : 8.9%
    2016: Military : 3.222% , Healthcare :17.073%

So, in 1981 the USA had the financial power to debug/correct the issues with fighter jets ,ships and so on.

But we are not in the 80s any more.
Easy to fix the F-35 issues, move the software/ hardware guys from the GE medical imaging division to the F-35 project.

https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zo...s-with-drop-tanks-and-thats-a-very-good-thing Lockheed Eyes Giving F-35s More Gas With Drop Tanks And That's A Very Good Thing
when I had begun to read it, I was thinking like 'because the Eagle has fuel tanks', then saw further down in the article

"Lockheed Martin's renewed interest in drop tanks for the F-35 also comes as the U.S. Air Force, which is the largest F-35A customer, has asked for funds to purchase a number of Boeing F-15X Advanced Eagles. The added range that these aircraft offer over other fighter jets ..." etc., LOL

now defence24.pl has an interesting write-up
    F-35, czyli pytania o koszt-efekt [ANALIZA] https://www.defence24.pl/f-35-czyli-pytania-o-koszt-efekt-analiza
EDIT perhaps the most interesting point is to fund future fighter jets through 'Treasury' (not through Ministry of Defense budget) meaning a separate financing

the authors appears to favor (for Poland)
    F-16V

and I add there's no such thing as offset programs available for those buying F-35s, a country then just can try win a tender for F-35 components or something (good luck with that hahaha)

Something old, something current and something new, the F-35A flying along side a Spitfire and F-16 during the Royal Netherlands Air force open day.
