"The Defense Ministry said Tuesday that an Air Self-Defense Force F-35A fighter disappeared from radar over the Pacific Ocean.
The other F-35's in that formation don't need radar to geolocate the missing F-35. The other sensors and the MADL will easily triangulate and narrow the search box on its last known location prior to any loss in communication. In any case, their training regime is to fly in formation using MADL as the link.

Alternatively the F-35s in question were probably carrying Luneberg lenses. Ground radars managed to track Israelis F-35s the same way.

Debris found in search for Japanese F-35 stealth fighter jet missing off coast

Japan's Air Self-Defence Force says it has found what could be debris from the F-35 fighter jet that disappeared during a flight exercise in the country's north.

Key points:
  • Japan has grounded other F-35s at its Misawa base
  • The cause of the disappearance is not yet known
  • Japan announced last year it would increase its F-35 fleet from 42 to 147
The F-35A stealth jet went missing on Tuesday (local time) while flying off the eastern coast of Aomori.

The debris was found in the sea near where the aircraft disappeared from radar about 30 minutes after taking off from the Misawa air base with three other F-35As for anti-fighter battle training.

Authorities are continuing the search for the pilot, a man in his 40s, and are working to confirm whether the debris is from plane.

Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya said the cause of the plane's disappearance was not immediately known and that 12 other F-35s at the Misawa base would be grounded.

The best available data will be from the rest of the F-35 flying together because the strength of the F-35 is in its sensor fusion and AN/ASQ239 to geolocate anything within its detection range.

Could the cause of the missing f35 be due to Chinese or Russian action? Could it be blamed on Chinese or Russian action? How could it just go missing without communication of problems. Maybe information is still being withheld seeing as it is a sensitive piece of military hardware but I have an uneasy feeling a false flag operation is going to surface.

To early for paranoia. To early for much more except a search.
Jumping to conclusions only leads to idiocy.

It will be blamed on Ru/Ch/Iran/NK of course, at least by a few low level newspaper : D

But seriously, what should be the F-35 military value if above Japanese waters, a third country can destroy it undetected by anyone?

Considering that the chance of failure high at the beginning of the machine life, and flatten out until the end of expected like it is more likely a mechanical failure.

More likely an not properly documented, or outdated assembly procedure .

Example they changed the design of the part, but the ALIS failed to update the manufacturing instructions. Or something like that .

From the latest news the Lockead doesn't use the ALIS during manufacturing, so there should be a big gap between the systems.
