U.S. F-22 stealth jets simulate dogfights with Norway's F-35 warplanes

ORLAND AIR BASE, Norway (Reuters) - Two U.S. F-22 stealth fighter jets squared off in simulated dogfights with two of Norway’s expanding fleet of F-35 aircraft on Wednesday as part of an exercise aimed at strengthening the NATO alliance and increasing its deterrent power.

The two U.S. F-22s are among 13 in Europe for a series of short-term deployments in places such as Greece and Poland, with further training missions planned in undisclosed locations in coming days.

Norwegian Air Force Major Morten Hanche, who piloted one of the Norwegian F-35s, said the mock fight with the F-22s was great practice, especially since the F-35s generally surprise and overpower other non-stealthy aircraft.

He declined to name the winning aircraft, saying only: “The F-22 is a very formidable opponent.”

Interesting who win this mock fight.

Interesting who win this mock fight.

Its no mystery who won is it, but my prediction is that One Day, the F-35 will win against the F-22. It won't be today, it won't be tomorrow, because deep at its core the F-22 is damn near invincible! but the F-35 is a very, very close second, if you saw that 9G break-out at RIAT, you know this is a very, very, capable airplane, and that F-135 is like a rocket motor, it will already propel the F-35 to a position of strength against any of the developing aircraft in the stealth and sensor fusion elements.

So while our adversaries are working hard to ramp up the threat, they will ultimately find that the F-35 is far more airplane than its critics led them to believe.

Morten Hanche is a formidable opponent as well, don't forget he wrote a very powerful rebuttal to the untrue accusations that the F-35 wouldn't turn, and couldn't fight, he is the real deal, and a fighter pilots, fighter pilot! Sadly in the US we have no notable persona's in that particular role, with the possible exception of "Max Moga", the first F-22 demo pilot, and now Commander of an F-35 squadron...

So I'd give a 100 bucks to know what Morten really thinks, and another 100 bucks to pick "Max's" brain!

Lockheed to build ALIS data transfer controls for F-35’s foreign customers

from me to foreign customers: if during your "military operations" a wing was shot off, you'd need to tell LockMart anyway

until then, enjoy your privacy thanks to "data transmission controls" in ALIS
LOL!

Lockheed Martin received a $26.1 million contract to develop data transmission controls for foreign customers of the F-35 and its autonomic logistics information system (ALIS).

International development partners and foreign customers of the F-35 have expressed concern that ALIS, which manages and analyses the fighter’s systems, training and flight logs, would automatically transmit information back to Lockheed’s hub in Fort Worth, Texas, possibly giving the company and the USA insight into their military operations.

“This effort provides F-35 international partners the capability to review and block messages to prevent sovereign data loss,” says the contract notice online. “Additionally, the effort includes studies and recommendations to improve the security architecture of ALIS.”

Previously, international development partners and foreign customers of the F-35 had programmed short-term software patches for ALIS that allowed them to control what data was sent back to the USA.

Data that F-35 foreign operators could block include the names of pilots, aircraft location and aircraft availability, according the F-35 Joint Program Office.

"All data designed to come back to Lockheed Martin to improve sustainment for the fleet will continue to flow through ALIS except for items each sovereign partner decides not to share," added Lockheed Martin. "The data we receive via ALIS allows Lockheed Martin to make air system and sustainment improvements for the enterprise."

The development work for this final fix is funded by the US Air Force, which contributed $10.9 million, the Marine Corps, which contributed $7.9 million, the Navy, which contributed $2 million, and international partners, which contributed $5.5 million.

Some 53% of work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas and 47% of work will be performed in Orlando, Florida, according to the notice. The feature is expected to be fielded in the first quarter of 2019, and will improve system speed and performance as well, according to Lockheed Martin.

Donald Trump repeats a claim that "you can't see" F-35 fighter even when it's right next to you. This is not the first time Trump has called the F-35 invisible. For instance, in a visit with Coast Guardsmen in Puerto Rico last year, Trump said the F-35 was “almost like an invisible fighter…You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see. So does he think the F-35 is invisible to the naked eye? Probably not. He generally means that it cannot be seen on radar, which is largely accurate. But the president should probably make that clearer so he doesn’t end up sounding like an idiot.

now noticed (the Republic of Korea) Navy mulls possibility of operating F-35B aboard new amphibious assault ship

South Korea's Navy has put up a public notice of tender for a research project to explore the possibility of operating F-35B stealth aircraft aboard its amphibious landing ship, officials said Friday.

Last Friday, the Navy initiated the tender through an electronic defense procurement system of the state-run Defense Acquisition Program Administration, citing moves by neighboring countries to consider running F-38Bs aboard their warships.

The project seeks to study the possible remodeling of the country's 14,000-ton Dokdo-class vessel to host the F-35B fighter, a short takeoff and vertical landing variant of the U.S.-made fifth-generation warplane. The research is set to end by Dec. 15.

Observers speculated that the Navy might seek to run the F-35B on the Marado warship that is currently under construction and slated to be deployed in 2020.

The existing Dokdo ship is seen as capable of operating only transport helicopters because its deck is not made of materials that can withstand high temperatures caused by fighter jet operations.

In 2014, Seoul decided to purchase 40 F-35A fighters for deployment from 2018 through 2021 at a cost of 7.3 trillion won (US$6.4 billion). The F-35A is the fighter's air force variant, while the F-35B and F-35C are for marines and aircraft carrier-based operations, respectively.

There has been speculation that Seoul may consider introducing several F-35Bs as it may have to purchase additional warplanes due to a shortage of warplanes that could occur in the coming years with the decommissioning of F-4s and F-5s.

Japanese media have reported that Tokyo's Maritime Self-Defense Force is considering purchasing F-35Bs for its large escort ships.
