Lockheed flew it's latest F-16V with it's new radar for the first time. It uses the APG-83 SABR developed by Lockheed. The "V" is mostly an avionics / electronics update with the new AESA being the prime feature to keep the F-16 relevant into the future. As such it can be retrofitted to older airframes. It also doesn't go as far as the proposed F-16IN.

Lockheed Martin’s F-16V, the most advanced version of the US Air Force F-16 fighter jet, took to the skies for the first time with a new advanced radar this week.

The company completed the maiden flight of its F-16V Viper on Oct. 16, according to an Oct. 21 statement. This marks the first time an F-16 has flown with Northrop Grumman’s advanced APG-83 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, which will deliver “a quantum leap in capability” for the plane.

“This flight marks a historic milestone in the evolution of the F-16,” said Rod McLean, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group, according to the statement. “The new F-16V configuration includes numerous enhancements designed to keep the F-16 at the forefront of international security, strengthening its position as the world’s foremost combat-proven 4th Generation fighter aircraft.”

Lockheed is offering the F-16V as an option for both new production F-16s and F-16 upgrades.

The Viper’s advanced avionics configuration also includes a new cockpit Center Pedestal Display; a modernized mission computer; a high-capacity Ethernet data bus; and several other mission system enhancements, according to the statement.

Nothrop’s new AESA radar provides advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground radar capability.

While Taiwan might become the "launch" customer, South Korea could follow shortly behind. SK wants it's KF-16s updated and Lockheed is ready to provide it's "V" package.

If the US is comfortable selling F-16Vs to Taiwan, then the Chinese should be equally willing to sell J-10B/Cs to Iran.

That is quite absurd! while in the USAF my Dad was assigned to Taiwan for two years, an assignment he turned down, since we owned a farm and he did not want to take our family overseas again? but many Sino Defense posters, myself included fully support Taiwan as a US ally, I personally think we ought to sell them the F-35.

But you go right ahead and sell your J-10's to Iran, while you're at it, sell some to your neighbor whose testing hydrogen bombs next door?? now that would be equally absurd, wouldn't it?

Yes and after F-16i don't get an AESA radar but with many customized Israeli electronics systems mainly used for A2G missions with her CFT which allow a big range but a little less as F-15i and can't be armed with 5000 lb GBU-28 very useful vs strategic buried targets that the F-15i can carry it is the King with her payload of 10.5 t !

Article on F-15A/D on CAM this month, customized, armed with JDAM, A2G missiles... only versatile Eagles in the world.

So overwing conformal fuel tanks are the new "fact of life"?? Bully! and I didn't like em, but they have grown on me?? I'd like to fly one light, and one loaded, I have NO doubt they will cut down on the light birds agility, they will, yes sir re Bob!

But even with them, the F-16 would still put our crew on the Sino D to sleep at max G!
