I understand he did the stunts all by himself w/o a body double. Hats off to him especially for someone in his mid 50s (i think?).
I don't always agree with his politics or even his odd behavior but I respect him as an actor.

Naval Today said:
Irish Navy’s Flagship LÉ EITHNE returned from her search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean on Friday 17 July.

Commanded by Commander Pearse O’Donnell, the 68 sailors of the LÉ EITHNE, augmented by 2 medics from the Army Medical Corps, deployed on the 16th of May to the Meditteranean where they successfully rescued 3376 persons over 22 operations in cooperation with the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre.

The LÉ NIAMH has replaced the LÉ Eithne in the Mediterranean and will continue to provide aassistance to persons in distress at sea in accordance with the provisions of international conventions governing search and rescue situations.
We do not hear too much about the Irish Navy.

It is small, but does have five newer Patrol vessels (two at 1,500 tons and two at 1,900 tons), two older smaller patrol vessels, and this 1980s flagship, which is close to 2,000 tons, is their only vessel with a helicopter hanger, and was the last of their naval vessels built in Ireland.

Well, the Irish ship that replaced their flagship in the SAR mission in the Med is already making news. So...this is two Irish Navy stories in as many days!

LÉ-NIAMH-Rescues-98-Migrants-off-Libya.jpg

Naval Today said:
The LÉ NIAMH, Irish Navy’s latest contribution to the search and rescue efforts in the Mediterranean, saved 98 migrants North West of Libya on July 19.

In it’s first operation since arriving in the area of operations on Saturday, the 18th of July, a total of 98 migrants (78 Male, 18 Female, and 2 children) were rescued from a rubber craft, 76 Nautical Miles north-west of Tripoli.

The LÉ NIAMH was immediately re-tasked by the Italian Marine Rescue Coordination Centre to another operation 58 Nautical Miles north-west of Tripoli. It was subsequently joined by the Italian patrol vessel the ‘ITS SIRIO’ who took an estimated 250 people on board.

The LÉ NIAMH handed over the 98 rescued persons from the first operation to the ‘ITS SIRIO’ and is awaiting direction from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre for next tasking.

The LÉ NIAMH departed Ireland on Friday 10th of July. The vessel has a crew of fifty-seven personnel, including two Army medics and is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Danial Wall.

This is the second patrol vessel built for them in the early 200s.

Now they are building three newer, enlargened versions of these vessels, the first of which was commissioned in 2014, LÉ Samuel Beckett, P61.

Europe Puts Its Finger on the Trigger

Hedgehog. Seemingly innocent, this word takes on extraordinary significance in a tiny Northern European country, reminding their population of barely 1 million of the constant threat of invasion by their former conquerers. You see, Hedgehog is the code name of Estonia’s largest-ever military exercise, which took place in early May, where tanks and aircraft from around the world joined with some 13,000 Estonians to practice avoiding the same fate that has befallen Ukraine.

shows everyday volunteers, who make up about half of the Estonian Defense Forces, firing automatic weapons from wooded hideouts and tossing smoke grenades before calling out, “The battle is over, all are friends!” But the message to Russia is clear and backed by unprecedented force: We are not friends.

But it’s not just

that’s hiding behind an armor of troops and tanks. At the same time, Operation Lightning Strike brought out 3,000 troops in Lithuania, while Operation Dynamic Mongoose included another 5,000 in the North Sea off Norway. It’s Europe’s latest show-and-tell of military capability, which, in a reversal of a trend that has lasted many years, is increasing dramatically. From Germany to Scandinavia to the Balkans, there arguably hasn’t been this much activity in

since the end of the Cold War, some experts say. Military budget spending from European nations with the biggest increases will total some $51 billion over the next seven years, according to a report by the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank. That’s almost a 50 percent increase from their total defense spending in 2013, according to European Defense Agency data.

With social services being slashed, some are far from thrilled that their governments are beefing up infantry units and spy networks.

While most think that Russian President Vladimir Putin wouldn’t be bold enough to invade a NATO nation like Estonia, most were also surprised at his adventure in Ukraine. So you can take the increases in spending as simultaneously symbolic — i.e., “Don’t mess with us, Russia” — and prep for a worst-case scenario, says Henrik Heidenkamp, senior research fellow of defense, industries and society at the Royal United Services Institute.

While Putin’s brazen land grab in Ukraine, perceived threats from the Islamic State group to the south and an influx of immigration understandably put European nations on high alert, it’s surprising that all of this is happening on the coattails of a crippling economic crisis that has made millions cringe at the mention of “debt” and “austerity.” With social services being slashed while unemployment skyrockets, some are far from thrilled that their governments are beefing up infantry units and spy networks.

Naturally, it’s in the countries nestled snug against Mother Russia’s borders, mostly the Baltic and Scandinavian states, where the biggest increases in defense are happening. In Lithuania, the government overwhelmingly voted to reinstate conscription in March, which will see some 3,500 citizens recruited to serve in the military each year. It also just approved a 30 percent increase in military spending and has plans for further increases in coming years. And just in case citizens weren’t convinced of the code-red threat, the national defense minister released a booklet titled “Things to know about readiness for emergency situations and warfare.”

Then there’s Poland, which is quickly becoming one of the continent’s most prominent military and economic powers. Its approximately $37 billion budget increase from 2012 to 2022 will include 70 drones, 70 helicopters, tanks and heavy artillery in a bid to become one of the region’s military powerhouses — meaning it wants a greater say on NATO policy and to build a homegrown industry that can export goods to other countries.

What is a bit more surprising than countries at Russia’s doorstep arming themselves is the fact that Western Europeans, like the war-averse Germans and economically strapped French, are doing the same. In March, Germany passed an $8.5 billion increase through 2019 on military spending. Over the same period, France will up its budget by about $3.5 billion. It could be seen as sending a message to the Kremlin that the NATO agreement holds weight, but remember: If Russia invades a NATO-member nation, other members must go to war.

In March, both European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen threw their weight behind a proposal for a European Union army, which would be in addition to existing NATO forces. The EU army would be a direct counter to the threat of Russia. But the proposal was called “fantasy” by a number of critics, particularly in the U.K.

So tanks and missiles on the border regions are sure to make Putin think twice about marching soldiers into European countries. But the big, bad

to the east isn’t the only thing making Europeans get defensive. From the south, the rise of the Islamic State group has sparked fears of extremism breeding on European soil, particularly from fighters who have traveled to Syria and Iraq, only to return radicalized, says Anthony Glees, director of the Center for Security and Intelligence Studies at the University of Buckingham.

Some of this funding is much more under the radar. Then there’s France, which has just passed an ambitious surveillance bill — the “French Patriot Act” — that allows for sweeping intelligence gathering in the wake of extremist attacks in Paris in January, much like the Patriot Act did after the U.S. passed it following 9/11. In many ways, countries see intelligence as a cheaper and more effective way to safeguard from threats than conventional tanks and missiles, says Glees. But it does come at the cost of skeptical and often outraged members of civil society who doesn’t see the security benefits as outweighing their privacy rights.

Portugal hires building two offshore patrol vessels Viana do Castelo Class for Marina

GN1xozg.jpg

(Defensa.com) The Directorate General of National Defense Resources (DGRDN) of the Ministry of Defense of Portugal has hired Portuguese consortium CWSE-NPO (SEA WEST union and EDISOFT for the construction of the NPO) providing two ships ocean patrol Class Viana do Castelo to the Portuguese Navy. The contract was signed on July 22 in the amount of 77 million euros and expected to start work in the shipyards of the first surface ship NPO type (Navio Patrulha Oceânica) occurs between 3 and 4 months after the entry into force of the contract. The delivery of the first would occur at 33 months in both the second would 39 months after entry into force of the contract.

These units complement the fleet up the NRP "Viana do Castelo" (P360) and the NRP "Figueira da Foz" (P360), acquired in October 2002 at the shipyards of Viana do Castelo (ENVC) and delivered to the Navy Portuguese in December 2010 and November 2013 respectively. West Sea shipyard belonging to the Portuguese conglomerate Martifer will be responsible for the construction of ships at its facilities in Viana do Castelo, while EDISOFT assume the installation and integration of command and control. Another Portuguese company, EID (owned by Portuguese state, the Portuguese company Efacec and Germany's Rohde & Schwarz) will be contracted to supply and install communications systems on ships.

In addition to supporting the replacement of the corvettes of the "João Coutinho" and "Baptista de Andrade" classes, the two ships will enable capacity building in the development of the Portuguese Navy operations. The NPO has a displacement of 1,850 tons, maximum speed of 21 knots, autonomy of 5,000 nautical miles and operated by a crew of 38 personnel. It was designed to accomplish tasks of search and rescue, patrol, surveillance, transport and support land and amphibious forces, release of mines, the fight against illegal activities and humanitarian support in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Portuguesa, participating in missions outside the Portuguese territorial waters, usually in the Mediterranean and Canada, making visits to African Portuguese-speaking countries.

Among the equipment installed in the NPO highlights Wärtsilä propulsion system, navigation radars Kelvin Hughes, electro-optical sensor Sagem Vigy 10 Mk3, an integrated communications EID system and remotely controlled weapons station OTO Melara MARLIN WS (Modular Advanced Lightweight Remotely-controlled Naval Weapon Station) armed with automatic piece Orbital ATK Mk 44 Bushmaster 30 mm in 2013 replaced the 40 mm L / 60 originally installed on the ships. The system of medium-caliber weapons MARLIN WS has been contemplated for both ships, but its acquisition by the representative in Portugal of OTO Melara, NT Defence, will depend on the financial availability.

Approved rescheduling observation satellite PAZ

OO9IWjU.jpg

(defensa.com) Spain announced agreement to modify the limit of authorized commitments to the Ministry of Defense by the Agreement of 13 June last year reconnaissance satellite program PEACE. This will allow adjustment of the corresponding annuity 2020 (the last since they began in 2015) of the National Programme for Earth Observation Satellite (PNOTS) using the PAZ radar satellite.

According to the agreement last June to acquire authorized limits spending commitments against future exercises, pursuant to the provisions of Article 47 of Law 47/2003 of 26 November. This allows the Ministry of Defence modification and reprogramming the schedule of the payment schedule of this program valued at 133.1 million euros.

The PEACE is an Earth observation satellite equipped with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in X-band with which Spain will have independence in this area and have military and civilian applications. The Spanish company HISDESAT was commissioned in 2007 by the Ministry of Defense and is the owner, operator and operator of the satellite, expected to be launched before the end of the year by a Russian rocket DNPER company Kosmotras.

The manufacture was commissioned in December 2007. EADS CASA Espacio, it is foreseen that the launch would take place in 2012 but various causes, mainly the economic crisis that has affected the Ministry of Defense has delayed this event. The PAZ satellite will form a constellation with radar satellites TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X under an agreement signed in the year 2012 HISDESAT with Astrium Services GEO, now Airbus Defence and Space.

Carried over from the UK military news threat:

Hmmm...for the 180, your link includes this (Translated to English):

Article said:
Modern surface to air missiles are also planned to engage air targets at distances of up to 25 kilometers and to protect other ships from threats from the air.

That would be more than the RAM...sounds like ESSM perhaps?

Well, as per my initial post
Effector wise, initial hints are a 127mm / 5" gun, perhaps 2x 27mm guns, 2x RAM bl.2. Organic aviation capacity. Also, later on, a possibility to add guided ASuW missiles and a point AAW capability, out to 25km.

I may have been unclear, or rather confused, by the differing info in different articles besides that navy post. But so far, maybe due to the early phase of the project, I have an impression that besides RAM and the Oto 5" gun, not much is safe so far.
I also have an impression that anyting beyond that are rather optional extras as of now.

Then again, I would believe ESSM to go (way) beyond 25km. With this I'm rather thinking Aster-15, maybe. Perhaps even a NASAMS derivative if there isn't a VLS space preserved.

I guess I was confused. It seems like the capability out to 25km is something they will have from the get go and not later on.

Yes...ESSM is more on the order of 50km. Probably Aster-15 as you say since it goes out to 30km.
