A century of Westland: the "Dragonfly" to "Future Lynx"

ExOsQVj.jpg

(Defensa.com) AgustaWestland Finmeccanica-it celebrated the hundred years since it began manufacturing aircraft, which has remained without stopping, the company that integrates in the UK. Westland Aircraft Works was established in 1915 in Yeovil (South West), making famous aircraft like the Whirlwind, Welkin, Wapiti (the first to fly over Everest, in 1933) and Lysander, before focusing on the helicopters, with their own designs as Lynx and AW101. Among the milestones achieved in 1986, when a Lynx got a world helicopter speed record (400.87 km / h.), Which remains to this day; It is the second largest manufacturer in manufacturing rotary wing aircraft

Today, one hundred years after building the first seaplane Short 184, the factory in Yeovil houses the final assembly lines Super Lynx 300, AW159, AW101 and AW189, the main supplier of these aircraft to the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom, providing integrated operational support, or IOS (Integrated Operational Support) and training services for its fleet of Apache AH Mk.1, Merlin, Sea King and AW159 Wildcat. In April 1915, the brothers Petter, who had a successful engineering business in Yeovil, made the decision to offer the Government its resources to assist the efforts of his country in World War I (PGM), starting work in July to the construction of 184-a torpedo designed by Short Brothers-the Admiralty had hired them under license, constituting the branch Westland Aircraft Works, ending the first Aparado in December of that year.

At the end of the PGM, production had included DH9A light bomber and heavy twin-engined Vickers Vimy, while demand fell sharply after the war, so he began designing civil aircraft. They were designed and built in the interwar period many devices such as Widgeon, Wessex, Wapiti and Pterodactyl. During World War II, Westland and their dispersed locations were only involved in the production of aircraft, unlike the PGM, when also made ammunition. Supermarine's factory in Southamp¬ton was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1940, paralyzing the construction of Spittfire, so to Westland became a major center for manufacturing and repair of this model and the Seafire, with more than 2,000 of them through their production lines, with many more repaired.

Another of his famous designs for the conflict was the Lysander, famed for use by the Special Operations Executive for the launch and recovery crews allied agents or in France. Likewise, the Whirlwind and Welkin fighters and the last tickets Westland, the Wyvern were made, it entered service with the Royal Navy after the war. In 1946, Westland decided to fully focus on helicopters, something that was not taken lightly, as in those times were rare and with very limited capabilities, initially producing models of Sikorsky licensed, benefiting from American technology, rather than follow the fledgling UK industry, but soon developed an own experience design. Then the UK aerospace sector was encouraged to rationalize by government policy and purchased production interests Fairey Aviation aircraft and helicopter divisions Bristol Aeroplane and Saunders-Roe.

The first models built, as Whirlwind Dragonfly and entered service with the Armed Forces of the UK and export customers and followed the largest and most capable Wessex and Sea King. In 1971 he flew the Lynx and in 2015 the much-improved Super Lynx 300, which is still in production. The collaboration between Westland and Agusta in the eighties led to the EH101, which has evolved to the AW101. In 2006 he signed a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence for the development and production of the Future Lynx, later renamed as AW159 Wildcat, who flew in November 2009 and gave the first issue in 2015 to the Royal Navy. In recent years it has been involved in the AW139, AW169 and AW189 programs.

Israel offers surplus F-16A/Bs to Croatia
June 23, 2015 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Israel is currently offering its old F-16A/B trainers to Croatia, hoping they will be interested to acquire them as a replacement for aging MiG-21 fleet.

The Croatian government is looking to replace its Soviet-designed fighter jets with Western-made aircraft as part of the country's ongoing efforts to modernize its Air Force's fleet and eliminate weapons and military equipment used by Russia and its allies. Currently, the Croatian Air Force has a total of 12 MiG-21bisD/UMD aircraft in its fleet.

The Israeli Air Force has a surplus since it is phasing out its old trainers to accommodate for the F-35A Lightning II's. The latter ones are expected to arrive in early 2017.

If selected, Israel Aerospace Industries will upgrade the Vipers to the ACE configuration which will include Elta Systems EL/M-2032 fire control radar with synthetic aperture radar mapping modes, Elbit helmet-mounted display system and color cockpit displays.

The aircraft can also be equipped with a variety of new weapons and sensors. If a buyer is found for the ex-Israeli air force fighters, they could receive advanced weapons, including Rafael’s Python 5 air-to-air missile, sources suggest.

Earlier this year, Croatia confirmed plans to replace its MiG-21 fleet and is currently considering a few possible options. The two leading contenders for the deal are second-hand F-16s from the US and upgraded JAS-39 Gripen C/Ds from Sweden. Alternatives considered included France's Mirage 2000, the Israeli Kfir and the FA-50 from South Korea's KAI.

Croatia is expected to select a new fighter by the end of this year and sign a deal with the manufacturer in 2016.

Typhoon continues to improve. Besides developing new multi-weapon-launchers, Airbus D&S has finished testing of the Aerodynamic Modification Kit, that has shown to drasticly improve Typhoon's aerodynamic capabilities in some areas.
Up to 45% higher AoA, up to 100% higher role rates and better nose pointing. All of that primarily in the slow speed regime.

LONDON — Flight tests of a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter sporting several aerodynamic modifications have greatly improved the aircraft's agility and weapons-carrying capabilities, Airbus Defence and Space said Wednesday.

The addition of fuselage strakes and leading-edge root extensions and other more minor changes to an Airbus test aircraft resulted in improved lift, angle of attack and roll rate capabilities compared with the standard aircraft, the Eurofighter consortium member said in a statement.

The Airbus-funded flight test work on the aerodynamic modification kit ended early this year and the results presented to Typhoon customer nations, said a company spokesman.

None of the Typhoon operators have yet signed up for a capability boost which, although aimed at new production aircraft, could in principle be retrofitted to existing fleets.

[...]

Even before Airbus aired some of its test data, Justin Bronk, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, released a report in April saying the Typhoon had "superb aerodynamics," which meant it could "outclass any current operational fighter in the world with the exception of the F-22."

RUSI is an independent think tank, but the report was sponsored by Eurofighter.

Airbus, part of the Eurofighter consortium alongside partners BAE Systems and Finmeccanica, said the modifications increased the maximum lift created by the wing by 25 percent, resulting in an increased turn rate, tighter turning radius and improved nose-pointing ability at low speed.

Test pilot Raffaele Beltrame said the program had exceeded expectations in some areas.

"We saw angle of attack values around 45 percent greater than on the standard aircraft, and roll rates up to 100 percent higher, all leading to increased agility. The handling qualities appeared to be markedly improved, providing more maneuverability, agility and precision," he said.

The test pilot said the modification work also offered potential benefits in the air-to-surface configuration, "thanks to the increased variety and flexibility of stores that can be carried."

The company completed 36 sorties from its Manching, Germany, facility using the IPA7 instrumented production aircraft. The flight trials followed some five years of studies.

The aerodynamics improvements are the latest of several capability upgrades announced in the last 18 months or so, including development of an e-scan radar, the integration of several news weapons and the development of a new multiweapon launcher.

German armed forces established by the G-36 accuracy drops due to temperature fluctuations. Using a hot air gun or shooting themselves in long intervals significantly reduces the accuracy of the shots.

This is especially true for German special forces participating in the mission in Afghanistan. German media reports does not lack the potential of G-36 it is observed defect soldiers in Afghanistan, who had a gun to use in extreme conditions - both in hot temperatures and long clashes with militants armed to the teeth.

Scandal snowballed, Defence Minister U.von der Leyen said that the German armed forces, the G-36 has no future.

J.Olekas: plans to buy new weapons has put aside

Lithuanian troops this year planned to equip the new G-36 party. National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas 15min.lt confirmed that it was decided to postpone the deal - so far, for an indefinite period of time. Reasons for the decision - namely the scandal in Germany.

Our soldiers G-36 as a proven and very good weapon.

"We turned to Germany, what is their assessment. They said it is conducting an investigation and we will send the answer is probably in the fall. (...) No claims of other things went wide or did not have. Our soldiers G-36 as a proven and very good weapon. We were in this year, we forecast a significant acquisition. But since the Germans have some doubts, slightly paused, waiting for a final answer in German, "- said J.Olekas.

German political arena shook information that the military leadership about the potential problems of the G-36 has been informed yet of 2012. But NATO partners informed just now.

15min.lt contact with the German news channel SWR journalists by his country's official position of the Ministry of Defense. In April, NATO partners to inform about possible defects weapons, together with recommendations on the use of arms. Main - weapon hostages, allow it to cool to about body temperature before opening fire again.

J.Olekas aspect of this scandal is not inclined to assess it more - for someone to blame former German military leadership.

"I can not say anything. We heard that they have such doubts. We contacted officially. And they promised to study the information presented. And we have suspended your purchase. But again I say our soldiers assessment, it is a good weapon, "- said the Minister of National Defence.

According to him, if not found significant shortcomings in the G-36, Lithuania will continue the "Heckler & Koch's output acquisition transaction.

WHAT answers for the G-36 expects to receive in the fall

Ministry of National Defense (MND) 15min.lt stated that the Lithuanian army so far has acquired G-36 weapons around 12.8 million. euros.

"For this amount was purchased two modifications of automatic rifle G-36 and the barrel grenade launchers, spare parts kits, repair and maintenance tool kits, training was offered to users and trainers", - says WHO comments.

According to the Ministry, there is Lithuanian army noticed minor faults using the G-36th "However, they appear when deviations from the use of the recommendations," - says the WHO.

In autumn it is planned for the G-36 testing, after which decisions will be taken.

The Ministry points out there is the possibility of refusing nesvarstanti German weapons, but not plan to increase and the G-36 arsenal. At the same time WHO suggests that the scandal in Germany caused by the reaction - in the fall army will clarify whether the Lithuanian Armed Forces used the G-36 is sufficiently reliable.

Arms manufacturers biting politicians to the flaps

How 15min.lt informed the German news channel SWR journalists couple of months ago a scandal broke out because of the G-36 far not calm. "Heckler & Koch" honor your product is going to defend in court.

The conflict only full swing. For the Bundeswehr Procurement Agency weapon manufacturers also claim for a guarantee of quality. In turn, the weapons manufacturers court seeks to ascertain whether the Ministry of Defence submissions based on the G-36 quality.

The German Army has purchased about 167 of the thousands of G-36th

Alexander Matonis: trouble may be caused by ammunition

Defense expert Alexander Matonis 15min.lt said no information about Lithuanian military grievances of the G-36th They say that any problems experienced and Special Operations Forces (SOF), which account for the gun use and extreme conditions.

"Lithuanian army automatic rifles G-36 operates from 2003, did not experience the problems of the German media writes. This is due to several things. Very intensely this type of weapon with war exploits in extreme conditions Special Operations Forces. Complaints of them unheard. SOP and some of our other military units use a shorter pipe, more compact versions of the weapon - G-36 KV, G 36 K, G-36 C. The above modifications and Germany criticized. It is interesting that the majority of our troops use the long part of the G-36, such as in Germany, but the problem also seems to be unheard of, "- said A.Matonis.

"It is possible controversy for the G-36 netaiklumo when the weapon is still hot, is associated with the G-36 ammunition used," - he added.

Defense expert not spare compliments "Heckler & Koch" weapon. The G-36, according to him, it has fundamentally changed the Lithuanian military skills and eliminate a large part of the Soviet legacy.

"In general, the G-36 Lithuania helped implement the military revolution in thinking - almost disappeared" kalašnikovinio "mentality. The G-36 is well-directed, reliable, lightweight. Lithuania with the G-36 different trouble - lack of acquired optical and other sights of this weapon that soldiers could shoot more effectively, "- noted A.Matonis.

Darius J: German troops had very unfavorable conditions

The situation in Germany familiar weapons expert Darius Antanaitis 15min.ltsaid that the G-36 is the standard infantry weapon of the extreme conditions he allegedly can not be as reliable as, eg., Heavy machine guns.

G-36 - the standard weapon for which the application of the standard requirements ", - stated D.Antanaitis. He added that "competitive price" was also one of the G-36 benefits.

According to him, the German military mission in Afghanistan was faced with extremely difficult conditions in which the G-36 could act as reliable as standard situations.

Afghan mission observed that the weapon will lose some accuracy is heating pipe. In particular, the tube itself is not designed for long continuous fire. In the second, gun mount polyimide, polyamide and kaisdamas becoming less sturdy. (...) Afghanistan, German forces faced with situations in which incurred heavy enemy fire - much more intense than that calculated in developing weapons. We had a very intense shoot at 40-50 degrees Celsius, which led to the decrease went wide, "- explained D.Antanaitis.

According to him, the G-36 simply unsuited caseloads that weapons had experience in Afghanistan. At the same time expert notes that the Lithuanian army uses a slightly different G-36 modification.

"Our G-36 mount is metal," - said D.Antanaitis.

Typhoon aerodynamic kit (AMK)

Airbus Defence and Space (DS) has completed flight testing of a package of aerodynamic updates on the Eurofighter "Typhoon II". These improvements should help increase agility and weapons transport capacity of European aircraft.

Flight tests with aerodynamic kit (AMK) are part of a broader improvement in workability of the Eurofighter program (Enhanced EFEM). These changes should help to maintain the "Typhoon II" at the forefront of combat capabilities in the coming years.

According to Airbus DS AMK comprises a wing spar which serves to increase the maximum lift of 25%. This change enables an increased turnover rate and makes the air more aggressive "dogfight". A mini-fixed wing added in the cockpit, behind the nose and fins to paste the airflow by preventing the nose from dropping during sharp turns and at low speeds.

Conclusive tests:

The Airbus test driver, Raffaele Beltrame said the flight test had given the better than expected, with an angle of attack capability of 45% and higher roll rate of up to 100% in comparison to non modified aircraft. These flight tests follow five years of study, with Airbus test pilots and German operational pilots, Italian and English. In total, the new system was tested in 36 outings since the Manching facility in Germany.

For Airbus, the AMK kit is likely to change embattre Typhoon Ii has vis-à-vis level especially handy devices such as the Sukhoi Su-35 "Flanker". Contrary to a system of adjustable nozzles, the AMK kit liabilities proves to be less expensive.

Progression of the Eurofighter:
With the AMK, Airbus launched a number of developments that are geared to improve the performance of the Eurofighter. Aerodynamic improvement is the last phase of a deep updating of Eurofighter program including the new radar Euroradar Captor-E electronically scanned which will equip the T3 standard series since 2018 and can be retrofitted to the current standard T2. This system will allow the use of MBDA Meteor missile MBDA Storm Shadow / Taurus, the MBDA Brimstone missile and bomb Raytheon Paveway IV guiding accuracy.
