So, maybe the second bloomberg was about devices hacked by the CIA, and they thought that it is coming from China : )

I think the issue with this story is the USA government generally doesn't want anyone to start to check seriously they hardware, because there is a higher chance to found USA spy devices in it that Chinese ones : D

But seriously, anyone remember the U-2 case when they shoot that doen above CCCP? They claimed that it was a NASA plane, they changed the story when they realised the CCCP has the pilot (alive) , the aircraft and the equipment.

Every USA company has to lie and hide facts if the government ask them.
And it is true for every company operating in a given country : the government can do whatever wants with them.

    It is strange.
The Chinese is a government official, working in the Chinese spy agency.

    This can make interesting precedent.
What will happens if the USA/UK CIA/GCHQ officials will be sent to jail if they travel to any third party country?

All tat it takes it to get the names of officials who responsible in the CIA for the Chinese operations.

USA using geostat satellites to intercept mobile phone calls.

I presume China/Russia can do similar stuff.

What's with the hyper-skepticism every time some article claims China is spying on the US? Are Chinese spies handicapped in some way that makes them incapable of doing this? I certainly hope Ānquán Bù is balls deep in every single US government network, human and electronic.

We've just seen what looks like a concerted disinformation conspiracy by what Bloomberg calls 17 authoratative sources.

Listening to mobile phone mast communications via geosynchronous satellite is a new claim, so I want some proof or someone announcing that it is technically possible before I believe it.

Seems kinda like BS to me. Even buildings or heavy clouds can block microwave frequency transmissions. Let alone for a radio emitter as weak as a cellphone. Unless you are in like cellphone tower range listing to communications it simply does not seem practical to me. Security researchers in the past tapped into GSM mobile phone transmissions and decrypted them with nothing more than a PC with a special radio set but you still needed to be within tower range. Now, it could be that they have infiltrated the cellphone tower systems themselves but that shouldn't be easy to do since these are AFAIK part of private networks. Or it could be that a satellite might snoop into WAN microwave transmissions between the cellphone towers themselves if they are connected like that. Those should have much more powerful transmitters than a cellphone. But quite often cell phone towers are connected using fiber optic cable in most countries.
