I was reading about INS Vikrant and Type 001A in wikipedia. Why does INS Vikrant has an estimated range of 8,000 nautical miles (15,000 km; 9,200 mi) in comparison to Type 001A estimated range of 3,850 nautical miles (7,130 km; 4,430 mi) at 32 knots ?
An example range can be a bit different for the Liaoning

Kuznetsov Class
12000 nmi (10 knots), 8417 nmi (14 knots), 7680 nmi (18 knots), 3850 nmi (29 knots)

I'm seeing a lot of confusion in the previous few posts regarding the range of the Vikrant versus that of Liaoning. Whether or not Vikrant's engines are American have nothing to do with how far it can travel.

Simply put, the faster the ship cruises, the shorter the distance it can travel. According to the numbers FORBIN provided above, the Kuznetsov only has a range of 3,850 nmi at 29 knots, but can travel 12,000 nmi at 10 knots. Warships in transit usually find a compromise between speed and range for a good cruising speed, which might be around 16 to 20 knots but with reduced maximum range as a result.

Wikipedia only says that Vikrant has a range of 8,000 nmi without specifying the speed, while it says Liaoning has a range of 3,850 nmi at 32 knots. This does not mean the Vikrant out-ranges the Liaoning. All this means is that Vikrant can travel 8,000 nmi at an unspecified cruising speed, a distance that Liaoning is undoubtedly able to reach with the right cruising speed.

If you want to post something about the Vikrant, do it in the Indian MIlitary Thread.

Leave such comparisons alone because they inevitably lead to arguments, fan-boi chest thumping, and trouble.

Liaoning's engines may not be as efficient as other engines, thus reducing her range.

Stony knows about as much about ship engines as he does about jet engines. ("Uh what engine is this J-10A using? I can't quite tell from the angle!" LOLOL) Higgle provided a well-written and knowledgeable answer and even added numbers in there (12,000 nmile range for the original Kuznetsov design at 10 knots) but it wasn't what Stony wanted to hear so he felt compelled to give his alternative fact made with ignorance and absolutely none of the evidence that he usually requires from those who disagree with him. See what we're dealing with here?

They modified a Soviet-era engine, so "better" is a relative term. Suppose you ponder which is more efficient, the modified Soviet engines on the CS Liaoning, or new Chinese made engines on the CS Shandong? My guess is the latter.
