After 7 years of sailing I would expect it to have transited the Suez Canal many times

In the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans

I don’t know why China is so conservative

It’s like me having a 200mph sports car and I drive only at 20mph

Not everyone has a 200mph sports car show off the car all the time, just like people, country has her own characters.

When you are a new driver and are not experienced in driving a rear-drive car (most high-end sports cars are), you better drive slow... I almost wrecked a Ferrari on my first time. I was so excited and stepped on the gas hard without realizing how different it was to drive a rear-drive car...

You need time to get used to a new machine, especially something as complex as a CV. The PLAN is trying to catch up to those who have spent decades in mastering the craft. You need to be methodical. Otherwise, the price for the potential carelessness and impatience is human lives... When it involves human life, you can't be more careful. You try to avoid it at all cost. Yes, this is a military operation. Every sailor is prepared to give their lives to finish a mission. Yet, this is more the reason to respect the lives of these brave and selfless souls.

Additionally, the CV16 is a training vessel, which means they may be training new pilots at this very moment. With new pilots, you want to make sure you have a backup plan for a new pilot who might just failed his landing attempt. His fuel is low and the poor guy is panicking... You better have a plan to calm him down and save his life and his plane. This usually means that you have a land-based landing facility as a backup. This then means you need to be close to land at all times...

If you ever looked at 200MPH sports cars you will see they all have very low mileage when sold. That's because everything about operating them is expensive, they are generally effective at only 1 or 2 things and not for general, multipurpose use. But it is really the best at showing off.

And when its your first 200 MPH sports car, the first thing you need to do is learn how and when to drive the thing.

So, yeah, good analogy. Just not in the way intended. :)

What good is it having a carrier in distant oceans, when China needs to secure the Western Pacific first?

Agreed!!!! If you want to have a blue water navy then go out into the open seas. Jumping in puddles outside of your front porch doesn't cut it. If the leadership is afraid of sending the wrong message then don't sail near trouble spots.

What's wrong with training out in the open seas?

First thing first train as many carrier qualified pilot as possible What is the use of training in the pacific when you only have 50 CQ pilots? Does not make sense.

In real battle pilots casualties will be astronomical You need at least 200 pilots for 3 Carrier at least
China still long way from reaching that number It takes 5 years to get from newbie to proficient pilots
Liaoning only operational in 2012 and takes another 2 years to get the full complement of fighters.

Carrier without fighter jet and qualified pilot is another iron coffin!

Another thing it take a long time to hone a naval doctrine for carriers. That is what they are doing with 2 carriers as soon as CV 17 get commission. One carrier can't do it !
