22° curve for arc length of about 1.4 km gives turning diameter of about 7 km.. Is that an emergency turn?

Nope....very normal looking higher speed, about 20 knots, turn to me.

High speed turn last year by USS Abraham Lincoln . Check the wake and of course the arc of the turn. The speed , I guess, is well over 30 knots. I can tell by the wake & rooster tail...water churned up on the stern while moving at high speed.

The Liaoning has indeed come a long way. I still find it hard to believe how much has transpired since 2012.

The ship and the PLAN have come a long way since I started following the PLAN in 2005. A very long way.

I must state however. I've yet to see in six years the ship has been in service any photos or pictures of the following events aboard;

1)Replenishment at sea.
2)Vertical replenishment including major weapons movements.
3)Basic flight deck fire drills...
4)....and a Rig the barricade drill. ...I just want to see the PLAN do these events with CV-16.

Let the naysayers say what they want, in their heart of hearts they know that there is something magical happening with the Chinese Military, and they secretly fear and admire it, though they will deride it in public.

Not magical. Well organized and executed. Very professional..I'd never put down anything about the PLA. I don't fear anything. They are a formidable force.

As for the russkies, hah, I would like to ask them how the Kuznetsov is doing??? One can literally 'hear' the silence....!

Very true.

Six years ago to the day, the Chinese Navy had a J-15 landed on the Liaoning aircraft carrier for the first time in history. This photos proof that it is not just fluke take off and landing !
Chinese on board naval aviation is still young yet they achieve so much in such a short time . Of course accident happened but very minimal and to be expected. But the western press and Russian are unrelenting when it come to bad mouthing Chinese carrier program I just read yesterday in Sputnik(sour grape) quoting "flopping J 15"

J15s are actually quite safe compared to many other naval fighters. F14 in particular comes to mind.

Sputnik’s report on Chinese military is quite interesting. They mostly say bad things while RT is almost always 100% positive despite having the same boss. And when Sputnik praises the PLA, it’s usually a VERY non sensical piece with emphasis is on the VERY (I recall an article praising a supposed stealth drone armed with AK-47s)

Many, many Tomcats crashed and burned as we use to say. Grumman built 712 Tomcats. 80 Tomcats were sold to Iran..Iran still flies the remaining 24(?) aircraft..

Modern military aircraft are much more safe compared to their predecessors. However until China builds many more J-15s, conducts continuous carrier air operations with multiple aircraft carriers I think a comparison is unfair.

I think a chart comparing accidents with flight hours flown would be more realistic.

And I'm sure the J-15, French Rafale, F-18 would come out ahead of the venerable Tomcat in any sort of safety comparison.

269 out of 916 German F-104 Starfighter crashed between 1960 and 1991, 116 pilots were killed. Military jets are dangerous. The German Starfighters hold a cruel record. But a loss rate of 10% is normal.

True!

Military attack and fighter jets are like race cars. Very powerful & complicated machinery. A person can't compare his auto with a F-1 or NASCAR. On;y the well trained and skilled can operate and repair military aircraft. Accidents will happen.

One can opt for more or less dangerous or better expressed difficult to use jet fighter. The J-15 with its large lift surfaces is probably an aircraft less likely to kill the pilot. In this respect, a very wise selection for the first phase in the emergence of a naval air force.
