This is like the controversial case since during the cultural revolution the communist party wanted to get rid of Confucius. I wonder how the party will explain all this. Maybe they are asking forgiveness?

The CCP back then was a radical leftist bunch, but the CCP today is streaming towards moderativity(and one towards developing the country with the heritage)

To those who NOWADAYS still simply considering Chinese are those of "Pig tail folks" or "Blue ants citizents" - you AMUSES me, not the other way around.

孔子, he is not THE OLDEST, he is not THE WISEST, (no MORTAL person can claim those titles), he is a FIGURE, that "China and Chinese people, CAN BE THAT GOOD."

There already is rumors that the statue will be (or already) removed from there. Despite the rumor, the point is: The LOCATING 孔子 statue at TAHT spot, at this time, do not means China is going to became a waring kingdom; (Even if) the REMOVAL of the statue, do not means China is going back to the culture revolution era.

@ kinglouis, FYI, the society of yours maybe have this thing that "polititians NEVER admit of doing (did) anything wrong." But in China, political power ALWAYS recognize what have been done wrong, despite the time it takes to recognize, and despite which "party" did. - Throughout recorded Chinese history.

We really need to stop the mind set of considering "everything happened in China, there is political motivation behind", especially at THIS GOOD FORUM. (should we considering the comming up royal marriage in UK, is actually a plot of some cultist planning to beat the UK constitutions?)

- hell, we Chinese ourselves stopped that SICKNESS a long time ago, didn't realize OTHERS being infected these days though.

Beijing's Confucius statue mysteriously removed
By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN
AP – Sat, Apr 23, 2011 6:29 PM SGT

The mysterious removal of a statue of Confucius opposite Beijing's Tiananmen Square sparked an online flurry of speculation Saturday by Chinese looking for an explanation. One report says the monument was simply moved inside a nearby museum.

The statue of the 2,500-year-old sage was unveiled just three months ago in the Communist government's most visible endorsement yet of a cultural icon it had once reviled.

On Saturday, it was missing from the pavement on the north side of the recently reopened National Museum of China, with no notice as to where or why it had gone.

Online forums were abuzz with speculation as to its fate. The news portal sina.com quoted a museum staffer saying it had been moved inside to a new sculpture garden. The staffer, who wasn't identified by name, said the statue had been displayed outdoors while the garden was being completed.

Museum officials would not comment and told The Associated Press that no tickets were available Saturday to go inside and check. A woman who answered the phone at the office responsible for the district encompassing Tiananmen Square said she had no information on the statue and told reporters to call back Monday.

The 31-foot (9.5-meter) bronze sculpture of a robed Confucius had sat just northeast of Tiananmen Square roughly facing a massive portrait of Mao Zedong, founder of China's Communist regime, hanging from famed Tiananmen Gate at the entrance to the Forbidden City.

Confucius was at the center of Chinese civilization for nearly two millennia but was widely denigrated by Mao, who railed constantly against traditional culture and what he called "feudal thinking."

Thirty-five years after Mao's death, the statue's appearance was seen as proof of Confucius' rehabilitation as an underlying ideology for a society that has largely discarded communist ideology, even as it retains the one-party Leninist political system.

Already in recent years, Confucius has featured in new books and training courses, as well as in a poorly received state-funded biopic last year starring famed Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-Fat in the title role.

While the statue's new location could not be verified, Internet users speculated as to whether its removal had been planned all along, or had been prompted by political pressure.

The website maoflag.net favored by hard-core Maoists critical of China's pro-market leadership, heralded the statue's removal as a sign of the government giving way to popular sentiment against building up ideological rivals to the foreign leader.

"Dump Confucius into the sea! Mao's words are loved because he cared for all of the people, not just the elite," said one comment on the site signed "Leftist."

i rather eat crap or die than to adopt the maoist ways. confucius>mao ftw!
i feel saddened to hear that confucius was hidden away. the great sage is a moral philosophy of china, and he deserves that spot where he was last month

you brought up a rather extreme view, but have a point non-the-less.

for the longest time in history, Moral philosophy of Confucism was used to justify the imperial rule that united china. But the mechanism through which china is ruled was borrowed largely from legalist tradition of Shang Yang.

To me All of china's ancient philosophers, does not matter what their tradition was, deserve their statue infront of museum of china. probly something like a garden of philosophers where life size statue of philosopher is presented in chronological order along a wooded path would be nice and more contemplative, and more helpful in educating the public of china's rich traditions. Mao himself could be at the modern section of it (heck if Nietzsche can be a philosopher why not Mao). and with out the overt political connotation of a overly large singular figure would bring.

some thing to contemplate about.

There are plenty of Confucius, Laozi, Sunzi, Mencius and what not statues in China's parks, temples and other places, just not in official or governmental places.

Confucius' thoughts are still of values, and alot of them are timeless indeed. If others misuse his philosophy, the fault lies with them, not him. Even Quran and Bible are misused.

I like your statement, but for Confucius' sake, let's stop quoting THOSE TWO holy books, in any manner. It will be really odd that a thread of Confucius finally turns into a holy war.

Me a mere citizen, can not make an OFFICAL statement of why the statue is removed; but like I said at #5, it is really really stupid to have that mind of "EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL" - yet it is true, things (and people) are really easily to make POLITICAL PREDICTIONs, out of anything.

For example, common folks memorize 秦始皇 THE FIRST EMPEROR, on there own way, but if one day, to celeberate the UNIFICATION OF CHINA, his statue has been put at certain governmental places, what's next? - the holy ney sayers loop around, "man, you put such a tyrannical figure out there, this must means CCP is going to DO SOMETHING the same way" (yeah, you know WHOM the neysayer I am talking about).

I mean, WTF? If you don't know Chinese social issues (if not "probelms"), keep your mouth shut! 孔子 as a figure, LIKE ANYONE IN CHINESE HISTORY, is a disputed figure. Some says he foundationed what "THE CHINESE WAY" of philosophy; some says it is EXACTLY THAT PHILOSOPHY, makes Chinese the ethical race as a whole, a cowerd nation in international affairs, and a propoganda nation in domestical affairs.

So, there is EQUALLY THE QUANTITY of people, open their mouth and cry out - when the statue is there, and when the statue is removed.

You guys know what? I am not a CCP member, and when I pay such enthusiastic respect to Mao zedong for his grand strategic achievement for this nation, it dose not makes me automatic worship him like a god. - but since I enthusiasticlly repect him, should I open my mounth-cannon and shoot around, "thy disputed his name, shall face OUR WRATH!"???

Any disputed figrue comes out, or get removed, from a public places, ALWAYS CAUSES social cry outs. And if some one think it is a good time of making some mouth cannon "See, the CCP has made another move..." kind of pieceshooter... you can try your luck! We Chinese has been doing this work for thousands of years, ALREADY.
