Hi all, just wanted to start a resource thread to compile a useful list of academic sources that can be used to study and analyse Chinese history for many english speakers and readers such as myself.

Here's one historian I discovered recently, as you can see by the respect he gives Chinese forces during the Korean war he can be considered a decent historian with a balanced view of historical fact.

Here's another fellow, Martin Jacques who also gives some interesting outlooks on China in general as being unique in world history.

A book I just finished reading and recommend "The Battle for China" it is a collection of essays on the Sino-japanese War. It is probably the best on the subject.

John King Fairbank is a very good historian on the subject, all his is very very close friends on two important key figures in Chinese new culture movement (梁思成 son of 梁启超 and 林徽因 daughter of 林长民) in early 20th century China as well. Just on a CCTV documentary on them, he is very involved in the events and would have a more or less inside look. I read the first edition of his book and he certainly knows his stuff. However, he died a long time long and I don't the updates to his book is as good or not.

Another is Ray Huang, His book on China, though old are still very popular... in China. Particularly his China: a Macro History and 1587: a year of no significance are quite popular China as History texts. (Of course in their Chinese version as 中国大历史 and 万历十五年)

Nevermind, didn't see you are specific about military history. In this case I have no idea. You can check out China History Forum for more detail I guess.

are there any good sites to find out about tactical-level Chinese operations during WWII? I'm particularly interested in company-level tactics, structure, equipment, doctrine and training.

Joseph Needham doesn't focus exclusively on military history but he is a pretty good source on sinology in general. He does overstate China's past achievements quite a bit, however.

Books from Osprey Publishing on the Chinese Armed forces. At least the ones that I thought were OK if you can't read Chinese and wanted more pictures

Don't forget the works of Ralph SAWYER and his wife on ancient Chinese military matters. Erudite with a clear writing style, his translations of classical Chinese military texts are probably second to none at the moment. And they provide lots of valuable, well-informed commentary as well. I thouroughly reccommend their work.
