Chopin's music and China

I do not think we have a thread about Chopin and his influence in China, so let me start one. When it comes to European culture, though not modern popular one, the thing that resonates well with Far Eastern connoisseurs is classical music, in particular the works of pianists. One of those that earned the admiration of many people in Japan, South Korean and last but not least China is Chopin, who as it happens comes from my little corner of the world. Below a link about him and his legacy.

Not many music lovers around it seems. Obviously some work is needed to change this.

Chopin's Chinese Child

Li Yundi won the gold medal in the 14th International Chopin Piano Competition and was both the youngest pianist to win this award as well as the first Chinese recipient. He says that Chinese pianists have the talent to play Chopin.

This seemingly ‘funny’ reply just shows how much needs to be done when it comes to make people appreciate something more than just ‘popular culture’ – a hint, the difference between culture and popular culture is such as between food and fast food.

However not all hope is lost. History has shown that even barbarians can learn to appreciate real art.

What was linked above is probably the most known or the most often played piece by Chopin just as the Wedding March is the best known piece by Mendelssohn though he composed many other works.

POKL, I just thought you were desperate about no posts in the thread you started :) Don't get me wrong, I like Classical Music! in fact this morning I listened to

plus on the same CD (which I own) there's the fifth part
Scherzo capriccioso, Op. 66 -- do you know what it is? Anyway, POKL, I wonder what would happen if I posted for example

OK – all fine. I can laugh about the Funeral March as indeed your post was in a way funny.

Plus we are in the Club Room, so Chopin is not out of place here, in fact anything but what is specifically against forum rules would not be out of place.

Last but not least it has a Chinese connection, because for some reason Chopin is more popular than other European composers with Asian and that includes Chinese performers and audiences.

The last part is particulary interesting for me.

:) POKL, if you were in Prague today, I would leave my apartment right now and go to shake your hand ... but I'm guessing you're like half-day flight away ... most people in this Forum are Military and/or Politics fans (ideas some of whom sometimes ... abruptly change my oxygen level LOL) but anyway I wish you to find somebody here to talk Classical Music to. Cheers.

While I am not in Prague right now I am much closer than half a day of flying time. But even though this is the case I have been to Prague only once and that was ages ago. Unfortunately and that is also a topic that can start another discussion we are so close yet hardly get together.

Matter of fact military is on top of my list too, but not everything. That is however a different story which is appropriate for the specific topics in other sections of the forum. More likely than not I will get in touch with you in the future on those specific topics.

Till than all the best.
