The 3.3 ton drone was towed on site around 1400 hours on Friday, 14 July, protected by a military camouflage tarpaulin and another waterproof in blue color.

After about two hours of preparation, notably to check the various on-board and on-ground systems, and also to refuel the CH-5's piston engine, the aircraft took off and landed A 20 minute flight, all fully automated.

The CH-5 program actually did a first flight two years ago, in August 2015, but it was a prototype that was totally revised thereafter.

It is the same model presented last year at the Zhuhai Airshow 2016 which took off this week in an aerodrome whose name was not revealed.

Compared to its prototype, the CH-5 is no longer the same aircraft at all. If it has preserved the V-tail and the same piston engine at the rear, the aerodynamics have been completely modified. The front tip is in "negative dihedral" now, the middle wings replaced the low wings and the vertical stabilizer keel has been removed.

Not to mention the fuselage that has been completely redesigned to take into account, in a way, passive radar stealth.

From top to bottom, the prototype of CH-5, the current version and competitor Wing Loong II

As for the performances of the CH-5, the communications made by its designer CAAA, subsidiary of the group CASC, are quite confusing. Indeed, if its chief engineer SHI Wen spoke more than 10,000 km and 60 hours autonomous flight to Xinhua Agency reporters, after the first flight of this new CH-5, the figures given to the Zhuhai Airshow 2016 are only 6,500 km and 40 hours of flight, when the drone was still presented in the form of a scale model.

In comparison, the Wing Loong II of a MTOW of 4,200 kg can only stay in flight for 20 hours while being armed, for a comparable size. It is difficult to imagine that for a MTOW 25% weaker, we have three times more autonomy and twice as many external frequencies.

The most likely explanation is that the figures released this week are only targeted characteristics, while the current UAV is performing more modestly.

Wing Loong II and CH-5 compete in the external market, especially in the large market in the Middle East where the two families of drones Wing Loong and Cai Hong (CH-x) Already conquered a large number of countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan ... etc., the design philosophy behind these two products remains very different.

When the 611 Chengdu Institute privileges both the survivability of its Wing Loong II with an operational ceiling and a higher cruising speed, and the variety of missions with a wide range of ammunition, the CAAA aims, for its part, Easy and inexpensive operation, thus the cost of the overall life cycle much lower for future CH-5 customers.

For example, SHI Wen revealed that the cost of producing a CH-5 is only 25% of the US MQ-9drone , and one of the tricks to get to this seems interesting - unlike the RQ-9 which has been designed to last as long as the cell, but which considerably increases the cost of design and production, CH-5 only lasts 33% of the total life of the drone but its cost Is also divided by three. The CBW has been adapted and reinforced to allow for more frequent wing change. This choice reduces the cost of production and the risk of having to completely change the "all-life" wing after intense use, but does not change the cost of the customer use cycle.

As for the performances of the CH-5, the communications made by its designer CAAA, subsidiary of the group CASC, are quite confusing. Armament level, the CH-5 has six points of loading capable of loading two different types of missiles today - the Air-Sol AR-1 missile of 45 kg and a range of 10 km already widely used in Iraq , And a smaller one,

- to address the different types of targets with greater flexibility and efficiency.

The CAAA is also planning to propose its new MALE drone for civilian missions such as maritime surveillance and geological surveys. For this purpose, several internal payloads have been designed, ranging from the optronic ball to the embedded SAR radar, via the hyper-spectral camera for example.

Finally, even if the authorities did not want to reveal the exact location where the CH-5 made its maiden flight, but based on one of the pictures showing the drone control screen, The image of a runway, it is believed to be Pingquan Airfield, a permanent 2,200-meter-long track of the Chinese Army. The facility is located about 223 km northeast of the city of Beijing, where the CAAA site is located.

I understand that the French "fioul" means diesel fuel.

It is not surprising regarding the duration comparison. It is the difference of Turbo and Piston engines.
Turbo-prop
MQ-9
Max takeoff weight: 10,494 lb (4,760 kg)
Endurance: 14 hours fully loaded
Powerplant: 1 × Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprop, 900 hp

WingLoong II: 4,200kg and 20 hours.

MQ-1C
Max. takeoff weight: 3,600 lb (1,633 kg)
Endurance: 25 hours
Weapon payload: 360kg

Powerplant: 1 × Thielert Centurion 1.7 Heavy-Fuel Engine, 165 HP

CH-5
3,300kg and 60(40) (heavy fuel engine) hours or 35 hours (gasoline engine)

Piston engines are inherently superior over turbo based engines in terms fuel economy therefor longer endurance. Heavy fuel (diesel) is superior over gasoline.

Comparing CH-5 with Wingloong II is not appropriate. It should has been comparing CH-5 with a scaled up version of MQ-1C (piston diesel).

60 hours (3 times) and 10000km may or may not be strange depending on the loadout, it may be max endurance without any weapon payload in surveillance mode, while the more "reasonable" 40 hours (2 times) and 6500km is the figure with full weapon payload in surveillance and combat mode.

40 hours (2 times) is very realistic considering MA-1C's 25 hours being about 2 times of MQ-9.

Yup that 60hr endurance is with no weapon maybe sensor load But how is weapon load out compare to reaper look like reaper can carry more bomb anyone has data? This CH5 can carry 1000 kg bomb According this author the only weakness of CH5 is the ceiling height of 9000m
BTW most jet engine now run on Kerosene and not Gasoline

China has started commercial production of its deadliest drone for overseas users, and it could be a rival to US remotely piloted vehicles, according to a Chinese drone researcher.
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

Wang Song, an associate professor with the school of aeronautic science and engineering at Beihang University, said the first flight of a mass-produced CH-5 Rainbow on Friday last week meant China was ready to offer international buyers a heavy military drone with performance equalling that of the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper, but at around half the cost.

The Rainbow flight was conducted at a military airport in Hebei province, according to Xinhua. Unlike with a test flight two years ago, the aircraft that was flown was a production model, the state news agency said.

The Reaper, or Predator B, was the world’s first unmanned aerial vehicle that could attack targets on the ground. At US$16.9 million, according to a 2013 US budget report, it was also the world’s most expensive drone.

“The CH-5 may come in at less than half of the price,” said Wang, who was deputy chief designer of a Chinese military drone but not directly involved in the Rainbow project.

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

The Rainbow series, ranging from the tiny model 1 to the three-tonne model 5, was developed and produced by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the company behind the space programme. Rainbows have been sold to more than a dozen countries, with annual production exceeding 200 units, and are the “most popular military drones in the world”, according to the company’s website.

However, the initial output of the CH-5 would be relatively small, Wang said. It could be more than 10 units a year, but was unlikely to exceed 20 due to the size and sophistication of the aircraft.

“This should meet the early demand,” Wang said.

The Rainbows are mainly for the overseas market.

In 2015, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence released a video showing a missile attack on an Islamic State target by a CH-4B drone, which is just a third of the size of the CH-5.

The CH-5 can carry up to 16 air-to-ground missiles and stay in the air for nearly two days, said Shi Wen, the chief designer of the drone, in an interview with Global Timeslast year.

After being modified for certain missions, it can fly for up to 120 hours, giving it a range of more than 10,000km.

This endurance enabled the drone to fly to a target 3,000km away and stay overhead for up to 20 hours, Shi told the state-run newspaper.

Such performance “leaves the Predator series in the dust”, he added.

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

The CH-5 has other advantages. For instance, it could be operated by an undergraduate student with basic knowledge of aviation after only one or two days of training, according to state media reports. This was because of the simplicity of its user interface, and the fact that operations like take-off and landing could be automated.

The drone can also be modified to be a low-cost airborne early warning system, or equipped with high-tech sensors such as wall and ground-penetrating radars developed by China.

However, Wang said the Chinese drone had a weakness compared to its American counterparts. The Reaper can climb to a height of between 12,000 and 15,000 metres. This allows the US drone to stay above the reach of most ground fire.

The CH-5, on the other hand, cannot operate at more than 9,000 metres, which makes it vulnerable to some anti-aircraft weaponry.

The limited ceiling of the Rainbow is a by-product of its relatively weak engine, according to Wang, who noted that China still lagged behind the West in aircraft engine technology.

“This is in fact the weakness of all China-made aeroplanes,” he said.

And what about giving an UAV drop tanks? Or at a least external tanks.
No need since UAV like these act more like a loaded loitering bird over an area of ground instead of like a fighter jet on a strike mission from a distance.

First posted by hmmwv at CDF Here is the performance of CH5 with bomb loaded

The serial production variant of CH-5 has made its maiden flight.

Apparently the performance has been improved as well, realized the more than 10,000km range previously promised. Max endurance is 60 hours (clean config) and 30 plus hours if equipped with 8 AR-1 missile. Combat radius is 2,000km.

“This is in fact the weakness of all China-made aeroplanes,” he said.

If you ask me, I think the difference of performance between CH-5 and Reaper is due to
  1. The different engines, Piston vs. Turbo-prop. I remember that Piston engine does not work well compared to Turbo engine in high altitude.
  2. The MTOW, Reaper is more than one tonne heavier than CH-5, 4.78 vs. 3.3.
The reference of Gasoline piston engine was from one article I read about the 60 and 40 hours difference, 60 being from Heavy Fuel (Kerosene) and 40 from Gasoline. Gasoline is one optional installation mentioned by the source, not necessarily widely adopted by anyone.

Regarding the weak engine leading limited ceiling statement, I feel strange about what Wang said.
If we compare two piston engine UAV, we see

MTOW Engine power service ceiling
CH-5 3.3 tonne, 330hp, 9000 metres
MQ-1 1 tonne 120hp 7620 metres
I see that CH-5 is as good as MQ-1 or even better.

Once again, according to the two points I said above, comparing CH-5 and Reaper's service ceiling (and other performance) is like comparing apple and orange.

I found a person named Wang Song from Beihang
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

He is actually involved in UAV program, BUT he is specialized in control (electronics) that means his education about aero-engine is as good (bad) as I am. But being directly involved in UAV program, he has the opportunity (more than me) to learn from his colleagues responsible for the airframe and engines. That surprise me.
