The case of who done it, hybrid UAV solve the mystery of pipeline theft.Henri K interesting story

What connection could there be between a hybrid UAV, half-plane helicopter, and an oil pipeline theft? A priori none.

Yet this is what happens at the CH-804C , a hybrid drone designed by the CAAA Institute , a subsidiary of the Chinese aerospace group CASC and a builder of military drones Cai Hong, which contributed to the rapid resolution of an offense in China.

The story dates back to early May, in Shandong Province on the east coast of China. The Chinese petrochemical company SINOPEC, ranked 4th on the list of the 500 largest companies worldwide (Fortune Global 500), has discovered a drop in pressure in one of its pipelines of refined products passing through the city of Zibo.

The anomaly occurred on a section 20 km long, and the case was quickly seized by the local police. But after two weeks of investigation, SINOPEC staff and investigators failed to locate the leak, caused by holes in the pipeline, and did not identify any suspects.

In order to be able to evaluate in an emergency the possible pollution of the environment throughout the sabotaged pipeline, SINOPEC finally appealed to the CAAA, which chose to come with its new hybrid drone, able to remain stationary above a point Fixed for accurate photography, or fly like a small aircraft to cover a wide area.

, the CH-804C drone began its mission Friday, May 19, and thanks to this new tool, which greatly improved the efficiency of investigations, the suspects were finally identified and arrested, and the whole In less than 24 hours.

Based on the CH-804 fixed - wing base model , the CH-804C weighs a maximum of 28 kg on take-off and has a range of 3 hours, compared to 22 kg and 24 hours for the first.

The particularity of this hybrid drone is the installation of 4 rotors on the tail beams attached to the wings, allowing it to take off and land vertically without the need for a track, or an ejection system like its elder .

In addition to these helicopter rotors, the main engine, operating a two-bladed propeller installed at the rear of the fuselage, propels the small aircraft like a plane at a speed of 150 km / h.

Although the Chinese manufacturer has not disclosed any other technical details on this drone, the CH-804C is far from being the only hybrid drone of its kind.

Indeed, one can quote for example the Sky Eye ,

This small drone has characteristics very similar to the CH-804C - It measures 2.25 meters long and 0.65 meters high, with a wingspan of 3.50 meters. The machine weighs 21 kg empty and 32 kg on take-off, with a radius of control of 30 km.

The hybrid is capable of flying up to 4,500 meters, with a range of 3 to 4 hours. Its maximum speed is 160 km / h.

This type of hybrid UAV therefore has its strengths to fulfill certain specific tasks, such as periodic inspection of high voltage lines and pipelines, as well as border and maritime patrols, for example.

Chinese solar drone just reached near space flight at 20000 m a record sofar.
This very long endurance Drone would make an ideal platform for maritime surveillance sensor or relay for telecommunication
They can fly for months without landing. It still few more years until this is realized! Sofar the load is pitiful

The Chinese aerospace group CASC has just shown that it can not only build rockets, spacecraft as well as military drones, but also the solar drone.

Indeed, its solar drone CH-T4 has just successfully realized a new test flight to the west of China. The aircraft, taking off in the morning and returning to the ground the same evening, evolved to more than 20,000 meters of altitude throughout its flight, a Chinese record in the area.

Designed by the CAAA Institute, the CASC's aerospace subsidiary, the CH-T4 is characterized by a large-stretch wing made largely of carbon fiber. The 14 meter long machine has 8 electric propeller motors to ensure its propulsion and a double vertical tail for the steering.

Its wingspan is 45 meters taller than that of an Airbus A320 , making it the largest solar drone in China and the second in the world, but it actually weighs just over 400 kg.

According to its chief designer SHI Wen (石文), the objective of this solar drone is to be able to fly, eventually, a few months or a few years without landing on the ground, while the current autonomy of the machine is already More than 24 hours of flight or 3,000 km, thanks to the numerous solar panels installed on the extrados of the wing and also to a very low consumption of its engines, about 2000 Watt.

This great endurance is therefore of great interest in some military and civilian applications, in particular in maritime surveillance of very long duration or serving as relay of telecommunication and data.

The CAAA started the development of solar drone a decade ago. Early studies focused on aerodynamics, structure, flight control, system integration, and propulsion and energy management. In particular, a series of technologies has been developed for autonomous and stable flight in an environment with a high variation in vertical flow.

After maneuvering on a smaller prototype, CAAA engineers flew the CH-T4 for the first time in March 2015 that was devoid of solar panels.

The chief engineer SHI and his team still believe that a few years are still necessary for the commissioning of a solar drone exploitable in Near space, which should have a much greater carrying capacity than the few dozen Kg today.

SHI states that the key to success lies in the generation of energy, namely very high efficiency photovoltaic "membranes" and highly efficient low-energy energy storage.

It is probably for these reasons that the main solar drones marketed in China today are designed by a Chinese company specializing in renewable energy, in particular in photovoltaic production.

The Chinese group Hanergy, the world's largest manufacturer of thin-film photovoltaic cells, has presented its two solar drones at the Drones Show in Beijing in 2016.

One of them, the 3.3-meter wingspan, for example, is a hybrid solar drone, half-plane mid-helicopter, like the

.

Thanks to GaAs photovoltaic cells with a yield of 31.6%, this small solar drone is able to stay up to 10 hours in flight, with a maximum autonomy of 700 km. Marketed for pipeline patrol missions and high-tension lines, it was noted by Ernest Moniz, former Secretary of Energy of the United States, at the 7th Ministerial Conference on Clean Energy (CEM7) Which took place in San Francisco in June 2016.

To be continued.

Well now they can operated both the UAV and the missile over the horizon, important development in Remote controlled technology and close the technology gap
All they need to improve is the engine efficiency

In mid-May, the CH-4 drone carried out two new Air-Sol tests by satellite link. A new optronic suite was also tested.
