80+ kn of thrust for a 6-10 ton plane (situation depending) yet it is still subsonic? strange they would design the plane around afterburner use yet not design the air intakes to handle supersonic speeds...

Max level speed is 1200km/h, I think it can go supersonic quite easily.

    From East Pendulum:
    http://www.eastpendulum.com/airshow-china-2016-six-ftc-2000-soudan
    To take the main points:
Sudan buys six FTC-2000, Nigeria is interested.
FTC-2000 has MTOW of 98 000 kg, which is of course 9 800 kg.
FTC-2000G is the export version of PLAN's JL-9A, which has DSI air intakes to save weight but is still 1200 kg heavier and has a range of 1650 km against JL-9 2400 km. But its landing speed is 210 km/h rather than 260 km/h.

I suppose that the naval version weight increase is only partly due to the wing area increase and largely to an increase in structural strength. But I understand that the hook has been deleted so that strength increase was not sufficient.

Man, I love that little bird. This version could be an excellent option for Air Forces with a constrained budget.
I think even Argentina could think seriously in a single seater version (with improved endurance and avionics ) as a good first step to rebuild it's almost dead air force.
A good "jack of all trades" plane.

Show this the next time someone calls the J-20/J-31 a ripoff of F-22/F-35.
