GAC released some good photos of its test flight facility on 02.Mar.2017. The business seems running very well.

Naval version JL-9 resumed flight test after CNY season.

The number of the produced JL-9 reached 100. Notice here No.78420 is equipped with formation light so it is capable for night flight training.

They are still making new JJ-7, but this is the final batch except they can find some foreign customer very soon, which is obviously very unlikely.

Are they build by the same company that is making the JL-9 or is this another company ?

If it's the same company I don't quite understand why they are still building the old version.

(I'm not sure "company" is the correct wording as all these facilities seem to belong to AVIC in some way)

As far as I know it is indeed the same manufactor and factory ... but I thought the JJ-7A is no longer in production since years ! Indeed strange.

Could it be that these are birds for maintenance or MLU?? Or do they specificly mention, that they are new-build ones?

I have this thought too that the production of JJ-7 has been ceased long before, but there are two official statements from GAC last year.

1. 24.07.2016

"On 24.07, the landing of a JJ-7A indicates that the test flight of type A planes of the current year production is accomplished. It also implies that an era comes to the end after decades of production and development. " In similar news states that the production of JJ-7 started in 1985, and totally XX aircrafts were produced in 20 years.c44cf9dcd100baa1c68124de4f10b912c9fc2e92.jpg 29fa4610b912c8fcd35e95a8f4039245d7882192.jpg ca5296dda144ad34ead0e5e2d8a20cf430ad85dd.jpg

"GAC CEO Wang Wenfei and the Chief Military Representative signed on the record book of JJ-7A and congratulated each other. This indicated that the last batch of JJ-7A from GAC's 20 years production is delivered."

Fazit: It's possible the current JJ-7As in GAC are old ones after overhaul/refurbishment, but in 2016 the production is definitely still running.

I see that the front and the air intake of JJ-7 are still the same as that of the early MiG-21's of sixty years ago.
