Chinese shipping second to none

But also South Korea has formidable ship building as well as Japan

Very powerful country's

What's interesting is that not having a strong commercial industry doesn't prevent you from having a strong military ship building industry. Just look at the United States. They have decades of military leading ship construction, yet virtually an insignificant share of world commercial shipbuilding. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is because military shipbuilding requires specialization that is not found in the commercial industry.

You can but then you wasted so much of Defense spending building very small number of ships. You didn't take the economy of scale No wonder the US defense budget is bloated

The Buzz word now is Civilian military integration where you involve the participation of civilian sector in the defense procurement and benefit from economy of scale and COT
And at the same time the civilian sector benefit from military research Think of internet

Remember when US naval expansion started she had a huge commercial ship building industry. Same with Britain and Holland and imperial Japan. It is only now that US don't build commercial ships, since it's cheaper to buy.

It also demands more money than it would have been to a country with a healthy merchant shipbuilding - despite the specialization needed for naval shipbuilding.

Here is the article from Global time about the domestic hihg performance Diesel engine I guess if this is successful it will brake the monopoly of foreign diesel manufacturer like Pielstick, MAN, Wartsila. It is important milestone in independent intellectual property right. Engine is tough business depend on long experience and advance material science

China's homemade diesel engine for naval vessels undergoes testing
By Qu Qiuyan Source:Global Times Published: 2017/8/15 21:33:40

China's independently produced diesel engine prototype with high power was put into test on Friday, which marks a big breakthrough in the research and development of homemade engines and will meet the demand of diesel-powered large and medium-sized naval vessels.

The new generation of high-power diesel engine for naval vessels was independently developed by China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC), read an article posted on the CSIC WeChat account on Monday.

The article said that the new-generation high-power and high-speed diesel engine was totally domestically made, which has reached the global advanced standards and will meet the urgent demands of large and medium-sized naval vessels. The specific name and type of the diesel engine is yet to be revealed.

Currently, most of the Chinese military ships adopt the 16PA6 V-280 STC diesel engine, which was made by a French diesel engine manufacturer named SEMT Pielstick, with a power of 5,180 kilowatts, news portal guancha.cn reported, saying that the Pielstick diesel engines are popular because of their fuel efficiency, high power and reliability.

Song Zhongping, a military expert who served in the People's Liberation Army Rocket Force, said that the engine test would help improve independent production capacity and save costs in ship building.

"China previously used diesel engines made by foreign countries. The high-power diesel engine is a signal of China's improving creativity and independent R&D ability, which meanwhile will help save costs for military ships and guarantee dynamic power supply in an independent way," said Song.

Still, neither US nor China will have imported the Pielstick diesels they use in their LPD's from France.

great!. Is it better than Pielstick ?
It would be extremely wasteful to introduce a new engine with the attending training, production and distribution of replacement parts, etc. with as only advantage that all intellectual properties are Chinese. Besides the Pielstick engine was developed a long time ago so it would be strange if a new engine wasn't better.
BTW Pielstick engines are made by Shaanxi Diesel Engine Works in China and licensees in several other countries, according to
