In my notes i have 9 ( 10 is good ofc ) 072A Yuting III :
992, 993, 994, 995, 996, 997 based to Zhanjiang rattached to 2th Landing Ship Squadron/6 AA Flot/SSF
913 with 15è Grp/5 Flot/ESF
911, 912 wih 1 AA Sqn/ Qingdao Naval District former 1 Fast Attack Flotilla/NSF

981. 982, and any 983 are Type 072A LSTs.

The PLAN is using the Type 72 LST, in four varieties/flights/versions.

Right now the PLAN is building the Type 072A, 4,800 tons and 500 tons carry capacity. 13 launched since 2003 nine active.

PLAN will have a blue water navy with ships like DDGs, FFGs, CVs, LPDs, LHDs... but they'll also need smaller ships like FACs, corvettes, and LSTs for more closer to home operations.

The USN can maintain an all blue water capable navy because they face little meaningful naval threats close to home. The PLAN on the other hand needs smaller and more affordable ships to operate closer to home at ECS and SCS during peacetime, and to operate in those same areas supported by larger and more capable blue water ships during war time.

The PLAN will basically become a blue water navy but with primary interests still laying near its home waters. That means they'll need large, modern ocean going ships with long endurance and large size but also some smaller, modern, shorter range ships more affordable and flexible to contend with the navies of less capable neighbours and to provide gentle reminder of the PLAN's presence during peacetime.

Yes that is how the real ships are being built.

Not sure about drawbacks versus a more conventional set up. Other ships have had similar arrangements, for instance the Visby class have even more concealed outlets hidden almost under their aft hull.

Side exhausts make the side of your hull dirty. Maintenance issue like having to cut the hull open to replace the diesels vs lifting out of the stack. South Africa navy also reported water ingestion problem in rough sea with their side exhaust MEKO. But hey, the customers get what they want.
