2018 | In a small corner of the CASIC outdoor exposure area is the LD-JHC300 trans-horizon creeping wave radar system. No detail is given but a LCS Freedom is 500 km from the coast on the model, and an Arleigh Burke 200 km.

There are now at least two variants of the KLJ-7A AESA radar. As seen before, the latest variant comes with side arrays:

This (earlier?) version doesn't have side arrays, and the shape of the main array is slightly different:

China Develops Prototype of Microwave Photonics-based Radar
Jun 14, 2017

China has developed its first prototype of microwave photonics-based radar and completed the imaging test, which analysts said could revolutionize the imaging performance and applications of the radar system and enhance the country's national security.

In the external field tests on aircraft including Boeing 737, the microwave photonics-based radar prototype which adopts the bistatic radar system and photon structure can clearly identify the structural details of the objects including the aircraft engine, tail section and flap track, the Institute of Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences said in a statement on its website on Monday.

Compared with traditional radar models, the microwave photonics-based radar can produce and process radar wideband signals more efficiently and faster by leveraging the rich spectral resources and photonic technologies, the Science and Technology Daily reported Monday.

The new radar prototype can capture images of high resolution, which is significantly higher than the images detected by radar of the similar models in the international arena, the report said.

"The new radar prototype marks a milestone in China's development of radar technology. By identifying the aircraft engines, the microwave photonics-based radar demonstrates its strong penetrating performance," Li Daguang, a professor at the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

If the system is used in military applications, it could significantly enhance the country's ability to safeguard its national security as the system can help identify the types of vehicles or objects in a long distance such as jet fighters or bomb carriers, he added. (Global Times)

There are many effort in this field. China is not the only one (no downplaying on my part), here is a link to an Italian team's test in 2014.

The "Those people" are the bunch of "where their ass sit determine what they say". If they knew the Western scientists' effort, they would not have said "fantasy", but in a reverse twist, downplaying China's progress saying "we are doing it". Pretty much like, if there is no F-22, J-20 would be a fantasy, if there is F-22, J-20 is just a catchup, they satisfy their ego either way.

I have stopped paying attention to these people. But I do enjoy "poking them in the eyes". :D

Researching it through ground based instruments and fielding an airbone "photonics radar" are two very different things. Hopefully China achieves the latter well before the rest. Quantum communication is an area China seems to be an overall leader in. Niches don't count and probably don't exist in any level of significance yet. Fielding it proves usability and so far no method is able to theoretically hide from it.

If China's close to fielding these sensors, they shouldn't have shown it off. Obviously they are a bit more candid these days because they need to demonstrate strength to the world and especially the US just to avoid serious confrontations. Still would have been better to wait until USAF 6th gen PCA is about to be fielded and F-35s proliferated all around the world before they sell these things everywhere and sell all those Chinese missiles to go with them. Even if they don't work 100% in real life, it should be a goldmine.

Photonics-based Radar is IMO more closer to be deployed than Quantum Radar. Photonic Radar is essentially a conventional radar. The difference is that Photonic radar use light (usually laser) pulse instead of electrical pulse generator. The pulse is to modulate the carrier waves (all the bands we talk about). The reason to use laser is the superior phase stability of the pulse it creates. Electrical pules generated by microchips are a function of operational temperature and frequency. The uncertainty of phase makes detection of distance and speed inaccurate, more pronounce when the carrier frequency goes up. The challenge is to convert the light pulse to act as a gate (modulation) of microwave (the carrier), it is realized by electro-optical device (the key). The device is mature.

It must be noted that photonic-based radar does not improve range nor S/N ratio. What it does is increase the time accuracy of the pulse, therefor the time and dimensional resolution. In simple term, traditional radar sees a big bright blurry spot, while photonic radar sees a shape of aircraft. If that return is big enough, it can distinguish the type of aircraft.

Quantum radar however, does increase range if the power of carrier wave remains same. The range increase is due to the increased S/N ratio. The S/N increase is realized by using quantum coherence as a filter. Theoretically the filter should reduce background noise to 0, making any faint (now matter how faint) return signal being detectable, S/N=infinite. Of course, in reality there is noise in the radar itself, so S/N is not infinite, but very high.
