Chinese purchase of Su-35

Russia’s Sukhoi has rocked the 50th Paris Air Show at Le Bourget with the premiere of its cutting-edge Su-35 fighter. Super-maneuverable even for a Sukhoi, the Su-35 has been dubbed the “UFO” for its outstanding maneuverability.

The Sukhoi Su-35 (NATO classification: Flanker E), Russia’s newest, super-maneuverable, multirole fighter jet has conducted its first training flight at the Paris Air Show, and aircraft industry experts were reportedly wowed by the jet’s performance.

“The plane easily passes from low-speed super-maneuverability mode to high-speed combat flight,” test pilot Sergey Bogdan said. Bogdan will pilot all Su-35 flights at the Paris Air Show. The engines are so powerful that the plane could be pulled out of any complicated situation, like a spin, at pilot’s will, he explained: “All you need is to get with the plane on the same wave, to caress and stroke it because, you know, it is a living being.”

It has top speed of 2,400 km/h, a 3,600 kilometer range, an 18 kilometer ceiling, and an advanced radar system to detect large targets from as far as 400 kilometers.

Probably the only major feature that the Su-35 lacks - and which prevents it from being labeled fifth-generation - is limited stealth capability, as only some parts of its airframe are made of composite material. Nonetheless, it can detect stealth aircraft such as the US’s F-35 at a distance of over 90 kilometers.

The aircraft’s thrust/weight ratio is unique at a kilo of thrust per kilo of aircraft weight, thanks to a pair of brand new 117C jet engines.

This enables Su-35 to perform all current stunts, including Russian specialties such as Pugachev's Cobra, the Frolov Chakra, the Dead Leaf, and the unprecedented Pancake, which is an horizontal 360-degree made turn without losing speed. The Pancake is performed only by the Su-35.

With these characteristics, the Su-35 surpasses practically all modern fighter jets such as France’s Rafale, Sweden’s Gripen, the Eurofighter 2000, and the modernized US F-15, F-16, and F-18. It is on a par with the fifth-generation US F-35 and F-22A, neither of which are currently on the market.

The Su-35 is generating so much interest that the airshow organizers have assigned it a spot right in the middle of the main avenue of the exhibition.

The Russian Air Force currently has 10 Su-35s, to be increased to 48 by the end of 2015.

The first country to buy a Sukhoi Su-35 could be China, as Beijing is already in talks with the manufacturer: “We have signed an intergovernmental agreement on the supply of Su-35 planes to China," Aleksandr Mikheyev, deputy head of Russian arms corporation Rosoboronexport told reporters. "As of today we have a legal base with China. An agreement on the protection of intellectual property has been signed," Mikheyev added. Beijing reportedly intends to buy 24 Su-35s, with a contract due to be signed by the end of 2013.

I would love some good Chinese food, but I better wait until after lunch, the best Chinese I ever had was at the Cat Terminal at Naha AFB on Okinawa, we went there a few times for Sunday dinner after Chapel. The old Yankee, Chopsuey in Lincoln Square in J,ville Illinois, now defunct had the best shrimp egg rolls I have EVER eaten, made by Mr. Yan himself, they ones I find now all have peas and carrots?????? brat

Now the Su-35 is the Flankers, Flanker, the only fighter aircraft in the world that "might be more agile would be the T-50, or the F-22, and before you tell me about your little canards, watch the Su-35 in action, nobody does those things with an aeroplane on purpose, at that altitude, that backs up my claim and I'm sure Mig would agree that OVT is a game changer..... now as to whether or not China will buy???????? I believed at one time that they would, but now, I am still calling all this hiatus a drawdown, I have serious doubts although I "know" they would like to play with that 117, but we shall see??? brat

Oh and have fun A.Man, bring us back some eggrolls. and some good pix. brat

Sukoi have eliminated the canards on the Su-35, this is a somewhat toned down demo as I am sure that Paris has grown weary of picking up the pieces of some of the airshow aircraft of the past????

This agreement has already been mentioned by s002wjh in post#255.

defenseindustrydaily.com and i believe Taipei Times had articles on this agreement signed in Jan 2013.

In the defenseindustrydaily.com article, they called this "China's agreement to negotiate".

It's always useful to have original agreement text on hands, isn't it? I see phrase 'negotiate AND sign a contract'

Well, I expect something like this was written in 2005 ill-fated contract on IL-76/78 delivery, so we just should wait and see. One can wonder if KnAAZ can achieve such tempo of deliveries having been busy with SSJ100, T-50 etc.

Sure. Always good to read the exact wording in an agreement. I also understand that any contract has to have its negotiation concluded before it can be signed.

I also sincerely hope that if this deal is to be concluded and signed in the near future, it will not suffer the same fate as previous Sino-Russian IL-76 and Indo-Russian INS Vikramaditya deals.

I really am is big fan of the Su-27 family of superplanes. More aesthetically pleasing than its US equivalent, F-15. Maybe Su-35, like Liaoning ex-Varyag, can shine its brightest in China.

It will never shine. Whoever idiot in PLAAF suggest to those those Su-35 that cannot datalink, fire Chinese ammunition shall be shot. Until real deal signed and official acknowledge by ministry of defence of china and rosoboexport. It is just one side wishful thinking.

The link that was posted did not show photos of a certain Chinese delegation; not saying that it's untrue but it sounds very suspicious. For years there have been "reports" that a certain deal was signed, first in Moscow, then at the Zhuhai Airshow, then at Xi Jinping's visit, and now at this event. And the repetitive inconsistencies with such rumors undermine its credibility. Until the Chinese government retracts its denial of such a rumor, this deal will remain such at most. Even if there were Chinese officials watching it; it doesn't prove anything since a Chinese team was also sent to observe the F-35 and yet no purchase was made.
