China and Russia have a long-term marriage of convenience.

Russia will be preoccupied with Ukraine for a long time yet and is in a quasi confrontation with NATO and the EU. The core population and economic centres of Russia are in European Russia, which are not threatened by a distant Asia, but which face a significant challenge from the EU/NATO nations which are right next door and are much bigger than Russia.

From the Chinese perspective, China is happy to use Russia as a secure resource base whilst it focuses on the waters of the Western Pacific. Strengthening each other economies helps them achieve their respective strategic goals.

On engines, Rolls Royce, GE, Pratt & Whitney each spent between US$1.4 and US$2.0 billion each on R&D in 2010.

Given that the engine portion of the Su-35 deal should be less than $1billion, if it speeds up engine development in China by 1 year, it will have been well worth it.

IMHO, ChengDu will make J-20 even much more Super Maneuverable by installing 3D Thrust Vectoring engine ( not only up & down ) , because ... ...

1) the next combat environment will be inside sustained Heavy EM interferences and ECM Jamming environment, where only the most Super Maneuverable aircraft will reign supreme.

2) Stealth coatings materials and Anti Stealth Radar is a never ending Cat--n--Mouse game. --- Just look at the 2014 Zhuhai Air Show, there are at least 3 kind of Anti Stealth Radar for sale. --- If a serious buyer ask, then these Anti Stealth Radars surely can prove their prowess by performing live demo. --- I am sure LockMart is working hard to find the next stealth coatings.

3) 3D Thrust Vectoring tech is applicable to so many weapon platforms from Missiles to Drones to Hypersonic Glide Vehicles, not only just for J-20

In summary, 2 billion USD is absolutely prudent spending to elevate the PRC Turbofan Engine Engineers and Scientists to the next level.

I personally even hope if AVIC can produce a reliable 3D thrust vectoring Turbofan Engines, then PRC shall be GENEROUS and voluntarily add 5 more billions USD to compensate the Russian Engineers and the Russian Scientists.

It is much better use of PRC money, than parking it in the US treasury with that almost zero 0 percent interest.

The contract will be filled within three years according to TASS’s source. Production of a modernized S-108 communications system—which was part of Beijing’s requirements—has already started.

While the addition of the Su-35 will boost Chinese capabilities while the PLAAF waits for its fifth-generation J-20 to enter service. The Su-35S is the most potent version of the Flanker built to date. The powerful twin-engine fighter is high flying, fast and carries an enormous payload. Combined with its advanced suite of avionics, that makes the Su-35 an extremely dangerous foe to any Western fighter with the sole exception of the stealthy Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor.

Thanks, I remeber that list posted in a Russian forum but I lost it.

As such ... it is interesting to see that already the serial/construction numbers are allocated and even more will be interesting to see in what colour they will be delivered. I hope for a light grey scheme similar to the J-10 !

2B is a lot of money, but it is not necessary cash in advance. So the active impact on the economy is not that well known.

On the flip side, 2B for two dozen modern fighter with plenty to study? why not. I am sure china would be willing to pay 2B for a few F35 to study, or a dozen F15SE.

Not Gonna Happen, I am going to go with the Eng's gut feeling here?? and they question is why? now I'm sure the Chinese would love to be able to buy some 117s to up the performance of their J-20 and even J-15s, J-11s etc.

But they are already flying Russian AL-31FNs, so it really wouldn't be a big deal to swap that out, but they don't need the SU-35s, it really just doesn't make sense unless China is just wanting to help the Russians?

Now the Russians need the cash, but if the Chinese buy the SU-35, that takes money away from the J-20 and the Carrier projects???
