My original message was about a Chinese claim it blinded a satellite in 2005 with a 50-100MW laser. I said if that was true, then China's a threat to all spacefaring nations. That was it, and I stand by my statement that China is a threat to all other spacefaring nations.

No, I can't verify the laser firing, but both Chinese sources (Siegecrossbow's linked article) and the Pentagon said it happened. I dare say that's good enough for most reasonable people.

The weapon demonstrator was a pulsed solid state laser that penetrated a 3mm thick sheet of still at 30 meters with three shots (almost instantaneously). Given that the technology was available as early as 2013, I wonder if any of it made its way onto the low-altitude defender or silent hunter.
