Chinese Engine Development

and, therefore, it was, in fact, undiplomatic of gates to raise the issue, particularly as he was addressing a [the most] senior diplomat. but as i've observed, previously, some reserve the prerogative of imposing a double-standard.
*rollseyes* Diplomacy is about candor and openness, not a veneer of etiquette and deference. It's perfectly fine for a SecDef to ask questions, just like its perfectly fine for Hu to deny or sidestep. Officials between China and the US ask questions like this all the time without* hard constraints imposed by the setting.

No, but I don't think the top brass cared about when the testing happened either, which was why Hu was puzzled when the SecDef asked about it in meeting (follow up reporting indicates they cleared up any confusion afterwards). Testing is testing, which all goes back to my original point. They don't do tests of technology in development to send political messages. When they want to send political messages they do testing and demonstration of mature technology.

I think Hu was puzzled why Gates would ask a question he should have known he was never going to get a real answer on.

I think sometimes, Chinese officials are not used to the frankness of Americans and think there are ulterior motives and hidden meanings, get confused when they can find none.

Pretty much. Stuff like this isn't new in the world of US-China diplomacy. Why a lot of US diplomats liked Wang Qishan. He knew what they expected in communication.

says who?
Anyone who's actually studied diplomacy.

Guys, we are NOT going down the "white," "yellow," or any other blatantly racial road here on SD.

Use your common sense...it will only lead to very bad things on both sides.

If you cannot find a "better" way to express such thoughts, then it is best not to express those thoughts here on SD at all. This is a defense forum, go somewhere else for that.

One of the reasons SD remains as good a place to come and discuss defense matters is precisely because we do not tolerate any of this.

ANY more of this will lead to warnings and suspensions.

Taxiya, the moderation was clear.

DO NOT RESPOND.

Read SD Rules. If you have an issue with moderation, respond to myself or another moderator with PM, DO NOT respond on the thread.

You have been here long enough to know this, therefore you are now receiving a warning.

The words are in fact racial, whether you meant them negatively or not is not the issue. Allowing it to happen, and then someone responds, and that invokes another response, and ultimately we have what amounts to race wars here on SD and we simply are not going there.

SD is not about such posts. Either find a different ay to express yourself here, or take them somewhere else.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MODERATION.

Honestly ... we know these graphics also from some other lists similar to earlier -11 production lists and Taihang versions ... and I have to admit I take them with a huge grain of salt most of all due to versions mentioned that I've never heard before.
