Like the WU-14 HGV and when the J-20 first appear when Secretary of Defense Robert Gates came to China for a visit?

If this article is credible then J-31 was actually using WS-13 since 2012! And assuming the J-31 engines are WS-13 instead of RD-93, there is not much difference between the two engines from the outside that is basically an identical clone right down to the RD-93's smoke problem.

Or quite possibly the WS-13 wasn't showing ALL of it's potential.

Doubt the J-20's first flight had anything to do with the Sec Def. If you'll recall the day to day watching after the J-20 was first revealed they were talking about flying the thing two weeks earlier but weather kept getting in the way.

Yet they flew it when he was in China. You think Sec. Def. Gates cares to read the daily weather to check up on a possible Chinese stealth plane flying sightings? I'm not saying you are wrong or anything, I think he didn't know or care enough to know about it.

No, but I don't think the top brass cared about when the testing happened either, which was why Hu was puzzled when the SecDef asked about it in meeting (follow up reporting indicates they cleared up any confusion afterwards). Testing is testing, which all goes back to my original point. They don't do tests of technology in development to send political messages. When they want to send political messages they do testing and demonstration of mature technology.

Or so we believe Hu is surprised by it. I'm sure he has a hint about it. He's probably just surprised how fast it came out.

I think Hu is 'surpised' in the same sense that the US Congress is often 'shocked' by the budget spendings.

I think he was surprise that it came up in this discussion. I find that when my wife says something that isn't in the context of the previous discussion I often take a long time to get the new contexts, which irritates her. Hu will not have been thinking about J-20 at all as it was not part of the context of the talks with Gates he had prepared for.
