Oh great this was my question in the other thread and two launches last year and now a 3rd? So why are blogs and military's fans calling this the 4th or 5th unit?

There is 3 units already in service? That would make this the 6th launch?

It is the same type that gate crashed the party at RIMPAC last year

So overall how many of these surveillance type ships in the water?

All the DDG, Cruisers, and super carriers in the world are no match for the electronic surveillance ships, they've got the biggest balls of them all. :D

I wonder if they are more expensive per ship or the 052C/D DDG.

which blogs are this?

851 -> first Type 815
853 -> second type 815 (improved variant 815G??)
854 -> Just god painted, 3rd Type 815 (815A or 815B)
+ 2 more unpainted -> (probably 855 and 856) -> probably also 815A or 815B like No. 854

In case you are wondering what happened to No. 852, it is no longer in service with Chinese navy.

I don't think I can be more clear. The 3rd one is No. 854. That's still at HD shipyard if you look at the picture from the blog and pictures by78 posted. And there are 2 other ones including the most recently launched one.

Could someone explain to me what kind of information these ships are supposed to provide ?
And why china is building three of them at a time ?

Well to be honest at first didn't know myself how many ships we were taking about but until it was explained in the last few posts but there is two active with 3 being launched within the last 1 year

There has been some development and iterations and I believe these have been continually modified and upgraded and these last 3 are pretty much good ships

What does a ship like this do? Well basically they are surveillance ships which collect intelligence, they listen they monitor and they track other activities of other navy's

Basically all electronic systems have emissions from things like transmitters etc, these emissions are very strong and can give lots and lots of information for example speed, direction and also provide a signature of a ship making it easy to find if the need arises

For example a USN carrier strike group usually practice "stealth emissions" where they minimise emission from the various elements so not to give away the position and information of the task force these emissions are also tracked by military satellites

If you can get the emissions of a particular naval ships you can then track the ship through these emissions as if it is a signature if it's a carrier even better

It's basically like detecting a acoustic signature of a ship through the propeller, if war breaks enemy can identify the ship it's looking for

It's not the be all and end all but it's another method of collecting intelligence and eve dropping the more information the better and it looks like China is progressing well in this direction
