China Securities Regulatory Commission has approved an application from the Shanghai Futures Exchange (ShFE) to trade copper futures options, the official Shanghai Securities News reported on Sunday.

Futures options for copper would be China’s first for an industrial product and serve as a risk management tool in non-ferrous metals derivatives trading, the financial newspaper said, without providing a timeframe for the launch.

A futures option contract gives the buyer the right to assume a futures position at a specified price.

The China Securities Journal reported in March that the ShFE was studying new commodity derivative products, including options for copper, aluminum alloy and alumina.

China is the world’s largest copper consumer and copper is the most traded base metal on the ShFE.

In the first half of 2017, the trading volume in ShFE domestic copper futures stood at 52.79 million lots, with a turnover of 12.35 trillion yuan (1.86 trillion US dollars), the Shanghai Securities News said.

The price for copper metal just keeps on getting higher every year. That's good if you are trading copper but bad for consumers as there will be more copper thief for scrap metal through out the world. Heck here in Houston we still having thieves breaking into abandon home property a/c units after Hurricane Harvey to steel the copper coil inside the air condenser unit and than resale it for cash at a scrap metal recycling center.:(

HELSINKI (AP) — Volvo Cars said Monday it will sell tens of thousands of self-driving cars to Uber, which is expanding to become an operator and owner of its own car fleet.

Volvo said in a statement that it would provide the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company with its XC90 premium SUVs complete with autonomous driving technologies, from 2019 until 2021. The framework deal is non-exclusive.

"The automotive industry is being disrupted by technology and Volvo Cars chooses to be an active part of that disruption," said Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson.

The carmaker, owned by China's Geely Holding since 2010, didn't disclose the agreement's value or the precise number of vehicles. Media reports suggest Uber is buying up to 24,000 autonomous Volvo cars.

The deal is based on an alliance Volvo announced with Uber last year when the two companies said they would collaborate on developing self-driving cars, pledging to invest a combined $300 million to the project.

Jeff Miller, Uber's head of auto alliances, said Monday the company was "thrilled" to expand its partnership with Volvo.

"This new agreement puts us on a path towards mass produced self-driving vehicles at scale," Miller said in a joint statement with Volvo.

Volvo Cars key manufacturing plant is located in Goteborg, Sweden.

The property market remained stable in October, with new residential

seeing slower growth year on year in 13 of the 15 major cities considered the hottest markets, including Beijing, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data showed.

"The investment and speculation fever in the country's property market has been dampened this year by a new round of cooling measures," said Yan Yuejin, senior researcher with E-house China R&D Institute.

In the first 10 months, property investment rose 7.8 percent from a year earlier, compared with 8.1 percent in the January-September period. The figure focuses largely on residential real estate but also includes commercial and office space.

"Given there is little room for home prices in the 70 large and medium-sized cities surveyed to rise, price growth on a yearly basis is expected to stay on a downward track," said Yan.

Last month, home prices in the biggest cities softened slightly and gains in smaller cities slowed, the NBS data showed.

"It is the first time since 2016 that home prices in 10 hotspot cities witnessed year-on-year drops in October, in contrast with only three cities in September. The home buying fever has been cooled in hotspot cities amid tough government curbs," said Zhang Dawei, a Centaline Property analyst.

Sales by value fell by 1.7 percent year on year in October compared to a 1.6-percent gain in September, the first decline in monthly property sales value since March 2015, according to the NBS data.

On a yearly basis, both new and second-hand home prices in first-tier cities reported slower growth for the 13th consecutive month in October. New home prices in smaller second- and third-tier cities also witnessed continuous year-on-year drops.

"Twenty of the 70 large and medium-sized cities saw second-hand home price declines last month, seven cities more than in September. The declining trend has maintained for months, showing an overall cooling property market," said Yang Hongxu, deputy head of E-house China R&D Institute.

Since late last year, dozens of local governments have passed or expanded restrictions on house purchases and increased the minimum down payment required for a mortgage.

The property market was also cooled by relatively tightened liquidity conditions as the government moved to contain leverage and risk in the financial system.

Latest data from the People's Bank of China showed that loans to the real estate sector continued to grow at a slower pace, with outstanding loans up 22.8 percent year on year to 31.1 trillion yuan (4.7 trillion U.S. dollars) by the end of September, 1.4 percentage points lower than the rate seen at the end of June.

Recent policies have showed the government will not loosen its stance in curbing property speculation, and that will limit the upward potential for housing prices, said Bank of Communications in a research note.

Authorities stepped up measures to act against irregularities in property financing earlier this month, prohibiting property developers, real estate agencies as well as Internet finance and micro-loan companies from offering illicit down payment financing for buyers.

Despite tough curbs, property sales are still hot in some cities, leading Chengdu and Nanjing to start a lottery-like registry system for home buyers to restrict property purchases, according to Zhang.

"The government will continue to toughen regulation, spreading measures to hot second- and third-tier cities, and even fourth-tier cities," said Zhang.

Unmanned stores see China take the lead in next-gen retail 2017-11-21 17:41 GMT+8

While unmanned Amazon Go convenience stores have grabbed headlines in the West, China has quietly taken further steps to take pole position in forming the future of how we shop.

Major players in e-commerce and traditional retail – alongside several domestic start-ups – have already rolled out unmanned stores in major cities, but are they really the future?

The concept is simple, thanks to mobile payment technology. To enter the unmanned store, shoppers use their smartphones to scan a QR code on the door, pick up their purchases and use a mobile payment platform or app to foot the bill.

An alarm sounds if a customer attempts to leave without paying, and the lack of staff on the payroll translates into lower prices compared to traditional corner shops.

French hypermarket giant Auchan announced earlier this month that it was working with Chinese tech company Hisense to roll out unmanned convenience stores across the country. Auchan Minute will be an 18-square-meter shop that accepts Alipay and Wechat Pay in return for some 500 products, and the French chain plans to establish hundreds of stores in China in the next few years.

Alibaba’s Jack Ma has been a consistent voice spearheading what he calls “new retail”, and the e-commerce titan is putting his money where his mouth is by announcing a new mall in Hangzhou, which will combine traditional shopping with next-generation online technology.

With the five-story mall set to open in April 2018, other Chinese startups are looking to beat Alibaba at their own game and establish themselves first. Guangdong-based BingoBox has ambitious plans to build 5,000 stores in the next year after securing 14.5 million US dollars in a fundraising round in May.

BingoBox currently operates unmanned stores in Zhongshan, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an and Chengdu, and all of its stores are built to the same 15-square-meter standard.

According to BingoBox’s website, operating costs are as low as 2,500 yuan (375 US dollars) per month, compared with 15,000 yuan (2,260 US dollars) for a traditional convenience store. Overheads like electricity consumption and salaries are cut dramatically, translating into cheaper goods.

However, the business model of lowering costs as much as possible has already had teething problems. A lack of air conditioning inside two Shanghai BingoBox stores during the summer caused goods inside to melt, leading to customer complaints.

Meanwhile, a report by TechNode looking at how BingoBox works found customer confusion and technical problems. With only one till available, technical glitches mean delays to other customers waiting to pay for their goods.

A study by Huatai Securities in August found that while customer numbers were still low, BingoBox had potential. Huatai found that 16 paying customers used the store in one average afternoon hour, and estimated that the store brought in revenue of 1017.80 yuan (153.43 US dollars) per day. However, if stores increased in size and scale and were made more accessible to more customers, then profit margins would increase from Huatai’s current estimate of 2.26 percent.

Operating at such low margins on low-cost produce is however a risk, especially when unexpected costs (such as a need for air-conditioning) are factored in. BingoBox insists there has not been one theft since its first store opened in 2016, but such stores are clear targets for crime, no matter the amount of surveillance technology installed in each store.

Other concerns over stores like Auchan Minute and BingoBox are the use of personal data and information. Tech giants like Alibaba already have access to a huge amount of data about their Chinese customers, and unmanned stores will force consumers to go cashless and share that data.

Several studies suggest Chinese consumers are less concerned about data privacy than Western consumers. Boston Consulting Group in 2014 found that only 17 percent of Chinese consumers considered their purchase histories as moderately or extremely private, compared to more than half of Americans, Australians and Canadians. Therefore, if unmanned stores hit off in China, their business models may struggle to expand overseas without allaying these concerns.

China has not adopted in-store self-service checkout technology on the same scale as countries like the UK and Singapore. In 2015, a Sina survey found 73.8 percent of netizens felt self-service supermarkets were unfeasible in China.

It remains to be seen whether or not consumers in the country will be willing to see unmanned convenience stores as a vital part of how they shop, rather than just a one-off curiosity.

Tibet wants to stay with China, seeks development, says spiritual leader Dalai Lama
"Tibet has a different culture and a different script... The Chinese people love their own country. We love our own country."

By: Express Web Desk | New Delhi | Updated: November 23, 2017 9:29 pm

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, commenting upon Tibet’s relationship with China, said on Thursday that the country does not seek independence from China but wants greater development. At an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata, the Dalai Lama said that though there have been incidents of “fight” between China and Tibet, the two countries enjoyed a close relationship.
Taking a positive stand on the issue, he said “The past is past. We will have to look into the future.” He also clarified that the people of Tibet are not against China and want to stay with the latter. “We are not seeking independence… We want to stay with China. We want more development,” news agency PTI quoted the spiritual leader as saying.

He further said that the Tibetans want China to accept the differences between the two countries and respect their culture and heritage. “Tibet has a different culture and a different script… The Chinese people love their own country. We love our own country,” he said.

The Dalai Lama expressed that they feel a lack of understanding on part of China and said that the latter does not “understand what had happened in the last few decades…With China joining the world, it has changed 40 per cent to 50 per cent of what it was earlier.”

He then went on to talk about the ecological significance of the Tibetan Plateau and recalled that a Chinese ecologist had said its environmental impact was like that of the South Pole and the North Pole. “The ecologist called it the Third Pole,” the Buddhist leader said.
Talking about the significance of Tibet the Dalai Lama said, “From Yangtze to Sindhu rivers, major rivers … come from Tibet. Billions of lives are involved. Taking care of the Tibetan Plateau is not only good for Tibet but for billions of people.”

The Tibetan spiritual also commented upon the people of India, calling them lazier than the Chinese but the also lauded India for its ‘stability’ and ‘diversity’. Compared to the Chinese, “I think, Indian people are lazy”, he said. “May be it is due to the climate. But India is most stable. In the world stage, India can play a role,” the Dalai Lama said.

He also praised India for its “spirit of religious tolerance” and for harmonious existence of diverse traditions together. “India has a tradition of living together. (It is) a living example of different traditions being carried together,” the spiritual leader said. “I can proudly state the same about Tibetan culture,” he said.

Praising to India’s ‘religious pluralism,’ he said for the last several centuries, Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam had coexisted. He also emphasised on the need to maintain religious harmony despite differences and said,”Religious tolerance is very important… although there are problems sometimes due to politicians who try to manipulate that.”

Talking about the Doklam stand-off between the Indian and Chinese army, the monk said these were ‘small problems’. “The Chinese Army had come. Then there was ceasefire. Then withdrew. It is not easy,” he said. He called for peace between the two nations and added that China and India needed each other and should uphold the spirit of ‘Hindi-Chini bhai bhai’.
On lighter note, he made a remark on the ‘genuine’ smile of the Indians, while the Chinese officials he said, “are experts in giving artificial smiles”

Not sure if it is the journalist or the lama that said "two countries". Either way, just that statement alone means the article is a waste of my time.

China's industrial profits up 23.3 pct in first 10 months

China's major industrial firms saw stronger profit growth in the first 10 months of this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Monday.

Industrial companies with annual revenue of more than 20 million yuan (about 3.03 million U.S. dollars) reported profits of 6.25 trillion yuan in the first 10 months, a 23.3-percent increase from one year earlier, the NBS said in a statement.

The growth marks a strong pick up from 22.8 percent in the first three quarters. In October alone, profits of major industrial firms rose 25.1 percent year on year, slowing down from 27.7 percent in September.

Among the 41 industries surveyed, 38 posted year-on-year profit growth during the first 10 months.

High-tech manufacturing and strategic emerging industrial enterprises reported faster growth during the ten-month period. The high-end equipment manufacturing and new material sectors saw profits up 29.3 percent and 29 percent, respectively, said the NBS.

Meanwhile, industries like coal, steel, chemicals and petroleum also recorded strong performance.

In the Jan.-Oct. period, combined new profit in the sectors of coal mining and washing, ferrous metal smelting and rolling, chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing, as well as oil and natural gas exploitation accounted for 51.2 percent of the total profit increase.

"While industrial profits maintained a relatively fast growth, improvements were made in enterprise efficiency and profitability," NBS statistician He Ping said.

In the first 10 months, costs per 100 yuan of revenue dropped 0.26 yuan from the same period last year, while expenses per 100 yuan of revenue went down 0.25 yuan, according to He.

He mentioned that the leverage ratio at Chinese industrial enterprises, a measure of financial risks, also went down amid the government's ongoing deleveraging efforts. By the end of October, their debt-asset ratio dropped 0.5 percentage points from a year ago to 55.7 percent.

I listened today to a discussion of economic topics by academic and banking experts on my favourite radio station. The first ten or fifteen minutes were spent on the debt level in China which is about as high as in the Netherlands but was rising faster. One contributor said that the authorities had been able to minimize the problems without upsetting anything upon which another said she had recently spoken with the Financial Times correspondent in China who told her that she could only get articles published that said that China was large and strange thus keeping the readers in suspense.

Not everything is perfect in China and one of the bad aspect of life in China is the sorry state of public toilet. Back then even the high end plaza has no toilet paper I hope it change by now
More than facility they need to teach the Chinese public about hygiene and etiquette of using public toilet, eradicate bad habit of letting kid defecate in public places. Some of them wear pant with hole. They should learn from Singapore experience in changing bad habit with concerted education and stiff penalty!

Xi stresses ‘toilet revolution’
By Zhang Hui Source:Global Times Published: 2017/11/27 22:48:40
China should continue to upgrade the country's toilets as part of its "toilet revolution" aimed at developing domestic tourism and improving people's quality of life, Chinese President Xi Jinping said.

The construction of clean toilets is an important part of pushing urban and rural civilization, and more efforts should be made in both cities and rural areas to upgrade toilets, Xi said in a recent instruction on the achievements of the toilet revolution carried out in the tourism sector, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.

Along with the toilet revolution, China should construct better public facilities and services to boost the tourism industry, Xi said.

Xi has long stressed the importance of the toilet revolution in enhancing the quality of the tourism industry. Officials are urged to make consistent efforts and take tailored measures to tackle long-standing issues and correct bad habits in tourism.

Local authorities are now more aware of the important role toilets play, believing that better facilities are not only beneficial for tourism, but can also improve the environment that people work and live in, and enhance the overall level of civilization of society.

Lou Xiaoqi, executive president of the Capital Civilizational Development Foundation, a Beijing-based NGO, told the Global Times that sanitation issues play an important role in urban development and city management, and while a vital part of infrastructure, are all too easily ignored.

"The toilet revolution also closely connects to a country's development of technology and protection of water resources," Lou said.

While visiting rural areas, Xi asked local residents about the conditions of the toilets they used and stressed many times that clean toilets for rural residents are important for the building of a "new countryside."

China launched the toilet revolution across the country in 2015 with the aim to make such facilities cleaner and more regulated.

Toilets in the countryside and at tourist sites have had a bad reputation. In rural areas, some toilets were little more than makeshift shelters surrounded by bunches of cornstalks, and some were open pits next to pigsties. At tourist sites, visitors were angered by insufficient toilets, unhygienic conditions and lack of sanitation workers.

By the end of October this year, China had installed or upgraded 68,000 toilets at tourist destinations, 19.3 percent more than the target.

The toilet revolution has been expanding gradually from tourist sites to cover the whole country, from cities to rural areas.

Lou has promoted a toilet revolution in Beijing since 1993.

"Now Beijing is able to keep its toilets clean, and the toilet revolution should shift to raise public awareness, provide special care to pregnant women, seniors and children, as well as prevent bacteria from spreading disease," Lou said.

The country plans to install or upgrade another 64,000 toilets at tourist destinations from 2018 to 2020, according to an action plan released by the China National Tourism Administration.
