Chinese Economics Thread

Trade Wars with China seems imminent now that Trump is officially in power.
I hope China is prepared. Brain drain (due to population outflow), stagnation, military conflicts ( against US, and potentially Japan, Russia and India), internal market instability will be what's coming for China.

While it pays to be cautious in these uncertain times, you are being an outright sensationalist.

People keep forgetting that "slowing China" can still add 830 billion dollar every year which is the size of Indonesian economy. first posted by Swoosh . Chinese GDP is now 11.6 Trillion Dollar which translate into 8500$/percapita or more

Slowing China Still Added a Full Indonesia Economy in 2016

QuickTake: Measuring China's Economy

China's economy may be expanding by its slowest pace since 1990, but its increase in output in 2016 alone was still enough to add an economy the size of Indonesia and bigger than the Netherlands, Turkey, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia.

Put another way, the additional value created by China through last year was the equivalent of a medium sized G-20 economy.

China’s gross domestic product added 5.5 trillion yuan last year, or $823 billion if converted to dollars using last year's average exchange rate, according to Bloomberg calculations based on World’s Bank statistics and China government data released last week.

A look around China's provinces puts the performance in perspective. Hebei, an old rust-belt region on the front lines of government plans to shutter coal and steel factories bloated with excess capacity, grew by 6.8 percent, even after hundreds of plants were closed. That output alone, about $480 billion, is roughly the size of Poland's economy.

Such massive scale is a reminder of the risks involved should U.S. President Donald Trump pursue policies that lead to a trade war with the world's largest trading nation, which also is the largest contributor to global growth. The White House has been quiet on China since power transitioned Friday, but Trump has tapped several economic and diplomatic critics of the country to serve in his administration.

China dodged a widely predicted hard landing in 2016 as consumption held up and services continue to outpace the old manufacturing sector. The economy grew by 6.7 percent--comfortably within the government's 6.5 percent to 7.0 percent target range.

To be sure, that relatively robust growth is coming at a cost of surging debt on the back of massive government stimulus. Outstanding credit has likely risen to 264 percent of GDP, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, with much of the borrowing conducted over the past decade--a pace that worries analysts and the International Monetary Fund.

Besides, China's economy is not out of the woods. Sentiment towards the currency remains fragile and if Trump delivers on his promise of punitive tariffs, economists say the trade tensions could spark a major growth shock.

Why China will remain Turkmenistan’s main gas buyer
January 26, 2017 ALEXANDER SHUSTOV, EURASIA.EXPERT
Turkmenistan, which once almost solely relied on Russia for its gas exports, is now the largest supplier of natural gas to China. With no prospects in the immediate neighborhood, Ashgabat is hardly likely to reduce its dependence on Beijing.

A Chinese worker of Asia Gas Pipeline (AGP) walks along the pipe of the Kazakh stretch of the new Turkmenistan-China pipeline at Otar gas station. Source: Reuters
In the first ten months of 2016, Turkmenistan was the largest supplier of natural gas to China, having exported 25.6 billion cubic meters in natural and other gases via the Central Asia–China gas pipeline.

Other countries are not yet able to compete with the former Soviet Republic. During the same period, Myanmar delivered China 3.7 billion cubic meters to China, Uzbekistan - 3.8 billion, and Kazakhstan – 322 million.

The fact that that “gas dependence” on China hurts Turkmenistan more than its previous dependence on Russia has been proven by a drop in Ashgabat’s cash inflow.

If in the first 10 months of 2016, the volume of deliveries increased by 11 percent then due to the decrease in average price per 1,000 cubic meters from $160 to $100, the revenues reduced by 30 percent, to $4.7 billion.

Ashgabat may even increase the supply of natural gas to China in the future. In an attempt to reduce air pollution, China, where a large part of electricity is generated by coal plants, plans to use more gas. This opens up a major opportunity for Turkmenistan.

Earlier dependence on Russia
Until 2010 the main buyer of Turkmen gas was not China, but Russia.

The formal reason for the cooling of Russian-Turkmen relations in this field was an explosion on the Central Asia–Center gas pipeline in the spring of 2009, where both parties indulged in a blame game.

The two sides were then unable to agree on the purchase price of Turkmen gas. Russia initially suspended purchases, and from 2010 through 2015, purchased only 20 percent of the previous levels.

In September 2016, the Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom’s board Alexander Medvedev said the company would not purchase gas from Turkmenistan at least until the end of 2018.

Analysts say Gazprom simply does not need Turkmen gas, while Turkmenistan now has other customers to sell extra volumes.

In exchange for the purchase of gas Gazprom would like to access Turkmen gas fields, which Ashgabat has given only to the Chinese. The prospects of implementing this scenario for the Russian company are glum.

China instead of Russia
In 2009, when the “gas relations” between Moscow and Ashgabat cooled dramatically, China overtook Russia to become the main importer of Turkmen gas.

In December 2009, the Central Asia-China gas pipeline’s first line (7,000 km long), linking China with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan was launched. Supplies of Turkmen gas to China began in 2010. However, the price of Turkmen gas for China was lower than it was for Russia.

According to Ashirguly Begliyev, Chairman of state-owned Turkmengaz, by 2030, Turkmenistan plans to triple its natural gas production and increase exports from 45 to 180 billion cubic meters per year. And the main buyer of Turkmen gas will continue to be China.

The plans for a sharp increase in exports will remain on paper. In addition to China and Iran, which itself is a major exporter of natural gas, Turkmenistan has no other markets to sell additional volumes of natural gas.

The prospects for the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline to Europe are not encouraging, and the TAPI gas pipeline, which aims to link Turkmenistan with Pakistan and India must pass through the territory of Afghanistan, where the situation only escalates. Therefore, the gas dependence of Turkmenistan on the Chinese market in the foreseeable future will only increase.

Doomsday Clock: Humanity might be edging closer to its end
By Sarah Karacs, for CNN
Updated 1927 GMT (0327 HKT) January 26, 2017

(CNN)We are creeping closer to the apocalypse, according to a panel of scientists and scholars.
The Chicago-based Bulletin of Atomic Scientists
has moved the "Doomsday Clock," a symbolic countdown to the end of the world, to two and a half minutes to midnight.
It marks the first time since 1953 -- after hydrogen bomb tests in the US and then Soviet Union -- that humanity has been this close to global disaster.

Two minutes to midnight is the closest the clock has ever been to midnight.

The group cited US President Donald Trump's "disturbing comments" about the use of nuclear weapons and views on climate change among other factors, including cyberthreats and the rise in nationalism, that have contributed to the darkened forecast.
"The board's decision to move the clock less than a full minute reflects a simple reality: As this statement is issued, Donald Trump has been the US president only a matter of days," the organization said in a statement.
The emblematic clock had remained at three minutes to midnight for the past two years.

Ah, the age old question: which is more tragic? You're dead but you haven't finished spending all your money, or you're still alive and you've already spent all your money.

A Trade War with Mexico (implementation of 20 % US import duties for Mexican products) as announced by President Trump will take place soon. It appears that he and his Administration do not care whether this "war" will hurt Mexico, Trump thinks like a bullying business tycoon who is blinded with mad rage and arrogance, as his threat for Mexico to pay for his US border wall didn't work. Regretfully, Mexico a previously good American friend of many years standing, has now become Trump's enemy. As this US President had previously announced, China is expected to be his next target and perhaps some other Asian nations too. Hopefully with prudent advice from his economic advisers, he will soon realise that starting Trade Wars are no damn good as the American people will also be hurt - it's like "cutting the nose to spite own face". We should however be prepared for the worst, and do whatever is necessary, and better still together with strong support of other member nations of the WTO, IMF G20 etc. Following from the well-received speech by President Xi Jing at Davos recently, China is now an acknowledge leader of free trade and globalisation by majority of foreign countries of the world. "Gong Xi Fa Cai" to all Chinese bloggers - may it be hopefully, a peaceful world in the Year of the Rooster.

Am I wrong? Even the chinese newspapers (an organ of the communist party) are starting to said the same thing - to hugely increase strategic weapons - meaning nukes.
