Single pronounciation of "Mei" alone might have several meanings. It might simply be a name of a girl or it can mean beautiful or it can be a different word means younger sister and several other meanings. Unless he shows you the Chinese word, it might be a bit difficult to guess the correct meaning from a single sound.
