No one is saying the Dreamliner and the A350 is a copy of each other although they probably have closer specs than that between the ARJ21 (with its super critical wing design) and its contemporary equivalent, not to mention the DC-9.

The ARJ-21 is incomparable to the DC-9 since the latter wouldn't be able to operate in the kind of conditions that the ARJ-21 is designed for.

To make that claim you'll have to do an apple to apple comparison.
Just to make things clear, I am only playing the devil's advocate since I have nothing for nor against it.

For the record I really do not know how successful the MRJ will be either.
It may have a better chance since they are going for US and EU certifications but I believe it is over weight against the US pilot's union regulations at the moment placing it in a difficult position at it's current status in the US.

It is nothing but speculation of western press just because aircraft resembled doesn't mean it is copy
To begin with it has different engine, different wing, different avionic, serve different segment of market, has higher attitude capability since most Chinese airport in the west is on higher plateau. which DC9 doesn't have
If the fuselage is the similar so what most of the aircraft in the world has similar looking fuselage

So what if they used existing tool ! unqualified journalist who doesn't a &&& about aircraft

the reality is it is a variant of the DC-9.
Why? simply, they have the tooling, the aircraft fuselagesare identical, so there is the historical fact the DC-9 was built in China.

However Chinese denominations first they call any aircraft with their own denominations, example J-16, which is a Sukhoi aircraft just built in China.

However the Chinese modernized the DC-9 original design and made a new variant which can be called "domestic".

Why they did it simple they had the tooling, a very good design, since the DC-9 and all its variants were excellent aircraft, it was the easiest way to do it and start in the regional jet business.

Was it the best? well time will tell.

If you have notice, all other modern regional jets have different configurations, the trend was different, just look at the Bombardier CS, it has a new design, the possible flaw of the ARJ-21 is it is using a proven and good design, but it is old even modernizing it.

C-919 is different, the design was new from the beginning , but the ARJ-21 you like it or not is a DC-9 variant and it was used to start in the easiest and smoothest way.

Do you think the ARJ-21 with its very round nose, and flat windshield windows is the current trend? most modern trends is a window canopy that is rounded and is part of the countour of the aircraft nose like in the B-787 or C-919, flat windows are a 1980s fashion and it shows the ARJ-21 has DC-9 DNA

Rostec might attract companies from the third countries to develop a Russian-Chinese aircraft
The airliner will be assembled in Shanghai

Viktor Kladov, Director for International Cooperation and Regional Policy of the State Corporation Rostec announced that companies from third countries might be involved in the development of the Russian-Chinese wide-body long-range aircraft at the IV Russian-Chinese Expo in Harbin, China.

"It is possible that the contractors for this aircraft will be selected on a tender basis in order to apply the latest equipment on it. Chinese partners will possibly like the third parties’ contribution, because they had worked with the third parties in their development of C919," Mr. Kladov said.

The United Engine-Building Corporation, part of Rostec’s aviation cluster also participates in the program of joint development and production of a perspective engine for the Russian-Chinese wide-body long-haul aircraft. The start of the engine tests is scheduled for 2022, certification - for 2025.

The total budget of the program will be around $ 13 billion. In the basic configuration, the aircraft will be designed for 280 seats with a flight range of 12,000 km. The airliner will be assembled in Shanghai.

The project of creating a wide-body long-haul transport aircraft, along with the creation of an advanced heavy helicopter, is a key joint project of Russia and China in the aviation field.

Rostec plans to sign the contract for a Russian-Chinese heavy-lift helicopter before the end of 2017
Negotiations on the conceptual model and configuration have been completed

Rostec may sign the contract with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) for the Advanced Heavy Lifter (AHL), a heavy-lift helicopter to be developed jointly by Russia and China, before the end of this year. This was announced by Victor Kladov, Director for International Cooperation and Regional Policy of Rostec, at the Fourth China-Russia Expo in Harbin (China).

"Negotiations on the conceptual model and configuration have been completed. At present, the draft contract between the parties is being prepared. We hope to sign the contract before the end of the year," stated Mr. Kladov. "Russian Helicopters, our subsidiary, is actively negotiating with our Chinese partners in this regard."

The AHL is being developed jointly by Russian Helicopters and Avicopter, a Chinese company forming part of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). It is expected that the maximum takeoff weight of the aircraft will total 38.2 tons, while its service ceiling will total 5,700 meters.

The helicopter will have a range of up to 630 kilometers, while its maximum speed will amount to 300 kph. The AHL's payload inside the cabin will total 10 tons, while its external payload will total up to 15 tons.

Proposed AHL specs are very similar to CH-53K, and therefore similar relationship to Mi-26: similar power output, but lower empty weight, payload capacity, and MTOW. Presumably such lighter structure trades top-end lift capacity for more economical performance in most scenarios.
