Laser generators are typically massive, but Chinese researchers have reduced their size, and they could soon be mounted on aircraft, tanks or even soldiers. The Chinese military could soon have the ability to disable heat-seeking sensors on enemy missiles or satellites using breakthrough portable-laser technology. The laser generator, which produces a high-frequency beam rendering infrared missiles useless, is typically massive in size and found on warships. But a research team in Beijing at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Physics said it has reduced the sophisticated device down to a single piece of crystal, according to

.

"This is a groundbreaking achievement," Liu Qiang, a professor of laser optics at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, told the Hong Kong newspaper. "Nobody has generated a laser at such a high frequency on a single piece of crystal before.”

In other words, the researchers, led by Professor Li Zhiyuan, could shrink the laser generator down to the size of a suitcase and mount it on aircraft, tanks or even soldiers. The ultrafast mechanism can not only damage enemy targets but apparently can pick up encrypted communications and detect stealth aircraft, as well. Zhiyuan’s research “hints at a very promising means for greatly expanding the power” of laser technology, his team was quoted as saying in a paper published in the latest issue of the journal

China is one of many countries racing to advance its laser technology for military applications. American aerospace giant Boeing in August unveiled its Compact Laser Weapons System, a portable device capable of producing an invisible beam of energy that can destroy enemy targets several hundred yards away,

HJ-10, 480mm penetration capability against steel armour or 1200mm against concrete.
I assume it is top attack.

Given that it was designed in parallel with the WZ-10 and is meant to be used by it, I'd agreed with you. Of course, doing a sanity check helps. Hmm.....would Abrams crews be laughing their heads off if it was Direct Attack mode? I believe so!

It probably has relatively good maneuverability, given its Air-to-air role that seems to be missed or glossed over by most western analyses. Supersonic speed to boot which makes it actually viable for such a role.

The HJ-10 talked about is the NLOS missile, not the unrelated ATGM.

The ATGM (equipped on the Z-10) isnt called HJ-10 anymore, but AKD-9/10 (7km for the AKD-9, 10km for the AKD-10).

The HJ-10 is designated AFT-10 in the PLA nomenclature for the entire system of carrier, launcher and missile. There were some discussions in the BBS about that low figure, and most agreed that the number is given for a 68° angle, which means that the 0° degree penetration would be around 1200-1500mm (remember, the HJ-12 is suppossed to have 1100mm penetration at 0°).

In the end, it plays no role, as both the NLOS AFT-10 and the Z-10 launched AKD-9/10 are both top-attack in some form (AKD-9/10 is launched towards the sky and hits the target's roof in a ballistic curve - see most photos/videos).
