I am conflicted on these RWS. While it is nice to have them, especially in urban warfare, the bulk of the RWS seriously compromises the rearward LOS of the commander periscope.
I would much rather they merged the commander scope and the RWS so not only would all round visibility not be sacrificed, the commander could engage hostiles instantly upon detection, rather than having to switch to the RWS and then find the target again to engage.
The commander’s sights are going to be more powerful and of a higher resolution than the RWS sights (which in turn could be deleted altogether to save costs, although having them as a back up would also be handy). So if the RWS was integrated with the commander sight, the commander should also have an easier time spotting and positively IDing hostiles.
With the sheer size of operations, the commander will not really need to look backwards. If they did, they'd be dead anyway since the armour everywhere but the front is so thin it doesn't offer any protection from any round designed to penetrate a tank. RWS improves the tank quite a lot. They could now shoot at infantry without getting out and doing that awful clumsy aiming they showed in the biathlons.
