4 units

Good platform to build Chinese airborne division

Heavy load, long distance and quick speed
From what I know, most of the Y-20s are based in Qionglai Air Base in Sichuan. They could easily supply the Shigatse area in Tibet in case something goes wrong near Sikkim (Doklam).

Can somebody explain to me why China didn't bought more IL-76 from the Russia back in early 2000s- before Y-20 was in sight?

I'm guessing the price the Russian offered was too expensive. The Russian plan for making the last big bucks thinking that the making of China's large transport aircraft would be too far in the future for the PLAAF liking.

They actually did, but Russia wasn't able or willing to deliver.
Coz the plant which build Il-76 is not in Russia but to Tashkent Uzbekistan and finaly the contract big for 34 impossible.

Actualy delivered are old Russians refurbished a order of 10 how many delivered ? in more 3 other ( secondhand ) and 14 from 1st batch new these ones.
But but :) 4 later converted to KJ-2000
