So the prototypes were most likely Y-20 ... Ans just a guess: The operational J-20s are also J-20As?

Are variation designations such as A, B, C, etc. official? In addition to these English letters that simply indicate an order in time, we have seen others (on different models) like H, G, S, Y, etc. which are apparently Pinyin symbols based on the Chinese name of the variantions.

It was printed on their maintenance procedure reference card, so I consider that fairly official for the Y-20.

As for other aircraft, it depends. Some designation like the H-6K is also very official because it was used on all sorts of official media including PLAAF's own PR office. But I can't verify all designations out there using this method.
