China's transport, tanker & heavy lift aircraft

However an-178's payload is meaningfully smaller than Y-9, let alone the Y-30 which is intended to have a 30 ton payload.

I think An-178 could have a role as a Y-7 replacement, however.
The 18 ton payload is closer to the Y-9 than to the Y-7.

Of course, you could have a mixed fleet of AN-178s for the <20 ton payloads, and Y-30s for the larger tactical loads.

Though that's assuming that Beijing A-Star does follow through. There are Beijing A-Star companies that make all sorts of industrial components, so my guess is that BASTC is a subsidiary of whatever industrial conglomerate the A-Star name belongs to.

18 tons is with something like quarter fuel, it's an interesting d
Yes, but then I would surely prefer the An-178 !

It's hard to argue with that, when one has a flying prototype and is based on a proven design and the other is... a model.

Anyway, do you (or anybody else) have the picture of the model Huitong had in his transport section? I am pretty sure it's actually not the same as the ones I posted.

Too late to edit, but it is apparently first seen at the AVIC I Xi'an (as it then was) booth at the 2004 Zhuhai Airshow. It is called the 运-8喷气运输教练机, Y-8 Jet Transport Trainer, and has some pretty weird numbers like 20 tonne payload but capacity to seat only 40. And is supposed to be a trainer first. Very curious.

The very same. It's apparently the above model painted. :)

Are You sure ... the model I posted looks very much - at least fuselage wise - like a MA.60-based design, while the one above is simply ugly !?

Anyway I hope for a version of the An-178 alias Y-2x.

No, I am not sure. Apart from the paint scheme there are other obvious differences like the landing gear and the mounting pole, but other things could be a matter of the angle - the first picture I posted is a lot prettier than the second although they are I think of the same model, for example. The windows number and positions seem to match, and the wing arrangements, etc.

Perhaps Huitong will know.

Sounds like this is the reason why China is not churning out Y-9's, and it makes sense as the backup plan for the transport version of the perpetually delayed C919.

It would be a pity if the Antonov company would fail due to Ukraine having become a failed state, but perhaps the Antonov people can escape to Beijing A star in the worst case. Otherwise A star takes a huge risk.
