Jiuquan site is the starting point of Chinese missile program, followed by civilian space program. It was part of the "两弹一星" (Fission bomb, Hydrogen bomb and Satellite program). Marshall Chen Yi once said "we will get it done even if we have to give up our pants". That words was not just figurative, it was dead serious, it means sacrifice on all levels. One of the top scientists, Deng Jiaxian went to investigate the malfunctioning of the trigger of a nuke device in the danger of being blown into radioactive pieces. Thanks to these heroes, China becomes what we see today.

You know who reportedly begging China not to sell anti satellite weapons oversea, especially to Iran.
That's a cheap way to do asymmetrical warfares.
