High-tech ship commissioned to track spacecraft

China commissioned a new-generation ship on Tuesday for tracking and controlling spacecraft. It will soon be used to service the Shenzhou XI manned mission, according to the China Satellite Maritime Tracking and Control Department.

The 220-meter-long, 40-meter-high Yuanwang 7, which entered service in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, has a displacement of 30,000 metric tons. Capable of resisting strong typhoons, the vessel can operate 100 days at the sea, the department said in a news release. The ship underwent a 60-day trial run in waters off Zhoushan, Zhejiang.

It was approved by the State Council in September 2012, and construction by Jiangnan Shipyard Group Co began in October 2014. The Yuanwang 7 is the most technologically advanced ship China has ever built for tracking and controlling spacecraft. It will extensively boost the country's capabilities, the department said.

Currently, China has four tracking ships in service - the Yuanwang 3, Yuanwang 5, Yuanwang 6, and now the latest one, the Yuanwang 7. It will take part in the Tiangong II space laboratory mission and the Shenzhou XI manned mission that are scheduled for fall, the department said.

Core module of space station will be launched in 2018, if Long March 5 is launched successfully later this year.

Nope, Tiangong-2 will launch later this year but it wil not be part of the large station it will dock with Shenzhou 11. the large station is supposed to be built and launched post 2020.

China launched the project of building its first Wideband Global Satellite Communication (WG SATCOM) System Thursday to enhance its Internet communication capabilities in railway, air and maritime transportation services.

Jointly initiated by Shenzhen municipal government and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the first WG SATCOM is a ten billion yuan project combining satellite communications with high-throughput broadband services. It extends high-speed Internet services to previously inaccessible places via satellite communication system, which means users can log on to the Internet when he is on a plane, a train, a ship or in any remote areas.

Currently China's wideband satellite communication services are mostly provided by renting satellites of the U.S., Japan and some European countries, which is very costly. The new system will greatly reduce the cost.

What's more, China plans to build an independent, reliable and around-the-clock WG SATCOM System in order to provide high-throughput broadband services to railway, airplane and ship passengers as well as mobile telephone users both at home and abroad.

"We plan to launch the first high-throughput satellite that covers the Asia-Pacific region by the end of 2018. By the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2020), we will launch two satellites to cover the Americas, Europe and Africa, in order to form a global wideband SATCOM system,"
said Cheng Guangren, expert in the application of satellite communications from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
