KABUL, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has obtained the permanent membership of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the country's finance ministry reported on its website Sunday.

Afghan Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi received the Certificate of Permanent Membership of the AIIB on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting earlier this week in Washington, the United States, the ministry said in a statement.

Hakimi also met Jin Liqun, president of AIIB, and discussed a number of topics including Afghanistan's membership in the bank, financial and technical facilities for Afghan solar energy, railway connectivity of five countries (Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Iran and China), financing infrastructure projects, among others, the statement noted.

"Afghanistan's membership in the bank has been very important and paves the way for the implementation of major national projects," the statement said.

Established in 2015, AIIB aims to provide financing to address the daunting infrastructure needs across Asia.

Very good development. I am looking into the prospect of road connecting the Pakistani coast to central Asia through Afghanistan.

NHA has approved PC-1 for construction of all important motorway project connecting Mirpur with Mansehra via Muzaffarabad (MMM) after NHA successfully completed the feasibility and detailed design of the project.

The project constructing a 4-lane divided controlled access Expressway connecting Shinkiari – Muzaffarabad with GT road through Mangla, Mirpur. For Initial 35 km, the project would run parallel to the existing Kohalla-Muzaffarabad road along river Jehlum. From then onwards the expressway would continue on the left bank of the river till Mangla and after connecting Mirpur terminates at GT road near Dina.

The total length of the Expressway would be around 200 km with an estimated construction cost of Rs264 billion. The project includes construction of four tunnels with total length of around 3 km. Construction of 122 bridges, 260 culverts, 6 interchanges, and 3 weigh stations is also part of the project.

Neelum Jhelum Hydropower's water filling reservoir starts....

The strategically important 969 MW-Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project (NJHP) achieved a major milestone, as water filling has been started today in the reservoir subsequent to the substantial completion of the dam.

Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project is being constructed on river Neelum in AJ&K. The project is an engineering marvel with 90 percent of the project being underground in the high mountain areas.

The project consists of four units with installed capacity of 242.25 MW each. The first unit of the project is scheduled to go into operation by end February 2018 followed by the second unit in mid March and third and fourth units in April 2018. On its completion, the project will contribute about five billion units of electricity to the national grid annually. Annual revenue of the project is estimated to be Rs 50 billion.

Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project has entered the final stage with completion of dam structure across the Neelum River at Nauseri. The completion of 160 meter long and 60 meter high dam has enabled impounding of the reservoir that commenced today with regulating closure of spillway gates. Water level will be raised at a rate of one to three meters per day.

Total storage of the dam is 8,207 acre feet upto design reservoir operating level of 1015 meter above mean sea level. After successful filling of the reservoir, the water will be diverted into the water way system by the end of 2017.

It is worth mentioning that filling of reservoir, which will take about a month, will not affect the water requirements downstream of dam because one of the three gates of the spillway will remain open during the process of reservoir filling.

As much as 15 cusecs compensatory water will always be released downstream of dam to cater for the population needs and sustain aquatic ecosystem dependant on the Neelum River. For environmental mitigation measures, a huge amount of Rs. 5.56 billion has been allocated in PC I of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project including water supply schemes for Muzaffarabad, Chattar Kalas and Komi Kot area in addition to a number of other such schemes, all to be undertaken by the Government of AJ&K
