will increase more than state’s budget: experts.

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an emerging issue of world economy and it will prove to be a fate changer for the region. In few years, revenue generated through CPEC will increase more than the total annual budget of the state.

This was said by experts in an opening session of three-day international conference on ‘Emerging Issues in Management Sciences’ organised by Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) on Tuesday. Minister for Higher Education Raza Ali Gillani was the chief guest.

The main aim of holding the conference was to bring scholars, researchers, educators, students and other groups interested in research to present their works on the developments in management sciences.

LCWU Vice-Chancellor Dr Uzma Qureshi said the conference would provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various universities to share their theoretical knowledge, research findings and educational/management practices with their colleagues and academic community.

She added, “In the dynamic and competitive business world of today, management practices are more than mere window-dressing.

- 46 SEZs to be set up along the Corridor....

In a recent chain of events, the Board of Investment (BoI) announced that the government was planning to establish 46 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) route in the long run, stated a press release.

During the Pak-China Joint Cooperation Committee meeting held in Beijing, nine out of the 46 zones have been declared priority projects. Chinese companies are simultaneously working on numerous projects relating to infrastructure, energy and railways under CPEC.

All Pakistan Business Forum (APBF) President Ibrahim Qureshi highlighted that the products to be manufactured in the economic zones would not only be exported, but could also be sold in the local market. This will make the zones ideal for investors as Pakistan has a market of more than 200 million people.

“Chinese companies have enormous opportunities to relocate their businesses to these priority SEZs,” said Qureshi.

He pointed out that every zone had special benefits for the investors in terms of skilled workforce, location, raw material and linkages with other parts inside and outside of the country.

“China is extremely talented in developing zones, especially from 1985 to 1995 and from 2009 to 2015, and Pakistan can learn much from the Chinese,” he added.

Chairing a meeting to review the development of SEZs under CPEC, Federal Minister for Planning, Developing and Reform Ahsan Iqbal said provinces should make presentations regarding SEZs more elaborative so they could attract more investment.

Provinces are finalising their SEZ plans prior to the visit of Chinese experts, which is due this month.

Silk Route: Karakoram Highway N-35 is a 1300 km national highway in Pakistan which extends from Hasan Abdal in Punjab province of Pakistan to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, where it crosses into China and becomes China National Highway 314.

The highway connects the Pakistani provinces of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

It was started in 1959 and was completed and opened to the public in 1979.
About 810 Pakistanis and about 200 Chinese workers lost their lives, mostly in landslides and falls, while building the highway.

The route of the KKH traces one of the many paths of the ancient Silk Road.
