I agree Pan, Right now the PRC's Industrial base seems to be set on playing catch up. Trying to establish broader independence of design and grow there conventional rotary wing fleets as well as establish there carrier culture long term. The heart of the article seems to be based on hype generated by rumors of J18, a contingency call from a PLA aviation officer and hype for the Blue whale.
The "J18" is another one of those possible arora types, a holy grail of PRC aviation always seeked but no proof to back it.
The report of senior captain An Peng it seems likely to me is based in spirit much like the report form a Marine officer who wrote a recommendation that the Marines cancel F35 and procure raptors and Super Tucanos. It indicates that there may be a debate going on inside the People’s Liberation Army Air Force at the very least. It seems to indicate that the PLA may be feeling rattled by the Freedom of navigation exercises and some are looking to push back. It also may be that Peng is voicing concern of the Air Force regarding the pace of the Liaoning’s integration into the PLAN and it's limitations. As well a proposing a alternative in the form of a Sea Control ship style concept.

Then links are made to other articles pointing to the Blue Whale concept. I really feel this may have been a concept meant to be a alternative to the Joint Russian Sino heavy lift Helicopter, but the Conservative leadership overruled it.

All this seems far fetched given China's engine development problems. They also have yet to either produce or procure enough traditional fixed wing and rotary transports.

Didn't the naysayers and doubters said the same mantra about China's stealth fighter program to be nonexistent from the beginning or anything developed by China?:rolleyes:o_O

Well I'm a big believer in China's need for LHD's and I would be thrilled if they did come up with VSTOL aircraft to go with that but I just don't think it's realistic given their technology bottlenecks nor efficient use of their resources given their other needs.

We've heard about the LHDs, and the potential for STOVL aircraft for some time.

I have no doubt that the PLAN is considering both, and probably has been looking at various studies and designs.

But I do nt believe that they have anything flying yet...and I would be surprised, if they had a mockup...that it would end up outside on an airfield at this point.

I also believe they are going to ultimately build LHDs too...but I am not sure one of those has been laid down yet either.

Like a carrier...once they start building, soponer or later it becomes pretty obvious.
