Heads up, I was asked by David Axe about the STOVL project, and gave him a few ideas. If I only had how much of an idea he hates STOVL fighters..

If he'd bothered to ask me any substantial questions about the Chinese military industrial complex, I could have told him that as a rule, most Chinese designs are not foreign copies, and no, most STOVL fighters won't hit the procurement costs of the F-35B.

Oh well, no good deed goes unpunished, I suppose.

David Axe is just an entertain writer of military development with no real world technical knowledge about anything.

"The main contractor of the avionics of Z-10 is the 613th Research Institute, which was responsible for integrating all of the avionics subsystems provided by subcontractors. Although foreign technologies are utilized (particularly French and Israeli, as rumored), this is limited to hardware only". This is an excerpt from the Z-10 wikipedia article and the only evidence of the "French components" I could find...

Now this: ... not sure how reliable, but anyway it sounds more "serious" than a research project only !

That means my J-18 is being develop!:D

That means my LHD is being developed! It would be pretty powerful even with just an all helicopter complement.

What is the likelihood that China may be looking into more of a Harrier or even an Osprey rather than a F-35B? They should be less technically challenging, no?

If we are talking about the disputed islands within the First Island Chain, they are within range of existing PLA aircraft based on the Chinese mainland or Hainan even if it has to involve in-flight refueling. And once again anything on those islands are sitting ducks in a hot war. Maybe they will risk basing some J-10A's there but I think J-8's are more likely.

I think he mean the Z-9, which was indeed a copy of Dauphin. Regarding the STOVL, I agree that the F-35B's engine takes up too much space and weight, so the Chinese could be working on something bigger, possibly with more space for internal weapons bay and fuel. A vertical takeoff version of J-20 is theoretically possible, just currently out of reach of China's contemporary R&D capabilities. Doing so would also require China investing trillions in engine development.

Maybe he thinks Pratt and Whitney is a French company (though in that case, "French" components would only be found in the prototypes).

Z9 or Z19 maybe at a stretch, Z9 because of it's Dolphin roots Z19 because of it's Z19 roots.

Still plenty of ways this could pan out and Questions to ask.
Are they planining A SVOL fighter or Attacker or is this just research? and if they build it is it sub or super sonic. and then export or just for the PLA? Finally why is it for a LHA or are they looking to put it on the deck of there eventual CV16 follow on?
