Now this: ... not sure how reliable, but anyway it sounds more "serious" than a research project only !

Yes...it is definitely a more reliable source IMHO.

However, based on the article's own wording, I would say the project is still definitely in the R&D stage only.

Article said:
"Research and development on components of STOVL aircraft, such as the engine, have started," Wang Ya'nan, deputy editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told China Daily."

So they have started R&D on a STOVL engine for such an aircraft. My guess is then that the culmination of this project into an actual prototype aircraft is still years away.

Time will tell...but once they decide on an engine design, they have to build it and perfect it.

"Though the PLA navy now has an aircraft carrier - the CNS Liaoning - it still lacks the experience of developing and manufacturing such a sophisticated naval platform, so there won't be more carriers in the short term," Wang said.

I find that extremely hard to believe. I think it's almost a guaranteed PLAN will have another carrier in the forseeable future.
Heck it would not totally be out of the realm of possibility if the first steel had been cut.

It's all in the context in that if we take "short term" to be a year or so, then Admiral Wang is believable.

true however that would be self evident and unecessary to say. Carriers takes a decade from first steel cut to commissioning.
I mean if Obama or the CNO (or any nation's leader) says 'there won't be anymore carriers for the US Navy in the short term' I would not take that as 'normal' and will be WTH?!?!

My guess is he was speaking in Mandarin (I assume) and not translated well into English text or he was being coy.

Maybe we should come back in 5-6 years. Then we will have a lot more to talk about in this thread. If the STOVL is only in development age, it will be ages before we see the first prototype. Also, if China's STOVL is the F-35B, the range and payload of the new jet would like be limited, unless AVIC can develop a vertical take off version of J-20 or something close to F-22.

Heads up, I was asked by David Axe about the STOVL project, and gave him a few ideas. If I only had how much of an idea he hates STOVL fighters..

If he'd bothered to ask me any substantial questions about the Chinese military industrial complex, I could have told him that as a rule, most Chinese designs are not foreign copies, and no, most STOVL fighters won't hit the procurement costs of the F-35B.

Oh well, no good deed goes unpunished, I suppose.

Yeah, but logic and critical thinking don't get you many readers, does it? :)

I guess not.

Mr. Axe admits that those images of the "J-18" which resemble the F-35B are unofficial.

Nevertheless, he assumes that the "J-18" will be an expensive 5th generation STOVL fighter with internal weapons bay and everything else, ignoring Rick Fisher as well.
