China to build world's first "artificial sun" experimental device

I saw this artical on the internet it took me by complete suprise. I didn't even know that a project like this was being undertaken let alone that it was entering the testing stages.

If this is true, it could be as significant, if not even more so, than China's space program.

They just call Fusion by a different name, this project has been going on for some time, many nations have worked together on an internation effort to achieve this.

Many people on the net doubt the PRC's ability to accomplish this task, if it can however accomplish it then it will good for both China and the world at large:china:

And if it doesn't live up to expectations, a lot of people are going to look very stupid for building it up into something it shouldn't have been. It isn't fair to put the weight of nationalistic pride on these scientists, when it's very unlikely they're going to suddenly make fusion "work" on a commercial scale, even if the project could do something very useful.

China is rather late on the scene after all, with a lot of groundwork prepared by other prokects. JET has already produced fusion reactions. ITER probably has a better chance of making fusion a commercial reality.
