a couple of things, you can't just fit unlimited number of satellite in space, for example geosynchronous orbit can only fit about a 120 or so, mostly these space are filled(competition are rough) destroy a couple satellite would have a huge impact.

as for hypocritical comments, that just what u expect from international politics, just couple days ago Taiwan openly said they should have nuclear capabilities, you did not hear any US condemnation, probably because they are planning their own nuclear test...

Hmmm.... a clearly a chinese military issue has gain huge media coverage, not to mention in such controversial matter as militarising a space. Now lots of people drews obinions over the matter, the feel its rigth, or they feel its wrong....and no matter where they are, its pretty certain that their wifes and/or best friends would propaply spend their weekend evenings with much more ligth harted issues.

So it creates world wide itching and scratching..."where can I express my feelings and discuss this matter." So lots of searches will be entered into Goolge toolbars round the globe by words such "chinese military discussion". Now we all know that it leads in here...Voilá, a discussion forum to finaly statisfy ones need to let it all out. Our own eyes glitter with dollar marks...

Untill they find out that the thread covering the hot topic has been closed becouse someone didn't care to keep his ranting into himself and wanted to ruin everyone elses joy by venturing to the realm of country bashing, flaming and personal Insult.

I see the ASAT test specifically in that context, as a very large stick to discourage the seperatists agenda, doubtless to be followed up with an equally large carrot or two for the benefit of Cross Straits compatriots.

I agree and disagree with you at the same time. The test is in relation to Taiwan, but I don't think it was actually directed towards the pro-independence Taiwanese government (whether President Chen, Premier Su, etc) in regards to the up-coming elections. This is about developing a capacity to hamper American operations, but I don't think China could actually make good on any threat to cripple the US right now.

Well who knows how many satellites they can shoot down. But there will always be a great cause of concern for satellites as long as they have military applications.

Unlike most of you, I'm VERY HAPPY at this development and hope this pushes the other nations toward militarization of space and beyond.

Like it or not, military is often at the front of technology R&D that'd eventually trickle down to non-military uses. If there was no military threat from space, governments are not going to spend a lot of $$ on space related technologies, and toss toss agencies like NASA a bone or two. But heaven forbid, if the "enemy" it out there, then by Gawd we gotta rush to build and close that gap. Here comes the billions in funding!

Hopefully this will lead to increased spending on space research, which initially will be military, and eventually the same technologies will benefit civilian colonization of outer space. I'd like to see manned stations on the moon at least before I die.

You have to be kidding. There is no way the governments of this planet trust each other enough to mean a militarised space could be good for humanity. I think it has to be peaceful if things are to move smoothly - it'll be difficult enough trying to divy up any resources extracted. Add space-based weapons into that? It would be a recipe for disaster.

Easier said than done how could you protect a satellite a fragile man made object way out in the space Gold plating anyone ? The US has been pouring billion of dollar since Reagan time Do we have something to show until now ? A lot of concept weapon of Star trek variety but nothing concrete!
