It is old news that there are J-11BGs (i.e.: J-11Bs with the new grey radome/suspected to have AESA radar) -- we had pictures of those back in late 2019.
How extensive do you think this standard will be? Will all J-11Bs eventually receive the BG upgrade?

To put my $0.02 in, I don't think it's meaningful that we haven't seen a J-11BG fitted with PL-15s (we seldom see them armed to begin with). If the electronics have been upgraded, then it would be shocking if the newest armaments haven't also been integrated.

I wouldn't be surprised if they rolled this out to all viable J-11Bs eventually if the upgrade is capable and cost effective.

Yes, it obviously doesn't mean anything to say that a J-11BG hasn't been seen fitted with PL-15. Furthermore, we've seen a standard J-11B carrying PL-15 in the past, so whether J-11BG has been seen carrying it or not yet isn't really important.
I'm just correcting Tam's post that no, actually we haven't seen J-11BG carrying PL-15 yet.

J-16 pilots or ground crew? I believe that this is the first photo of PLAAF air crew since the coronavirus outbreak.

I wonder if the pilots are still training. If so, do they wear the surgical mask when they board the aircraft?
Ground crew, and no the pilots wouldn't be wearing paper masks under their oxygen masks my friend... LOL

More likely the entire fleet will be. Sooner or later so will the J-10B.

What's more interesting is the route they can take on this.

A.) Replace the radar entirely. They take the existing one out, and replace it with say, the entire unit from the J-16. It turns the play into essentially a single seater J-16 but lacking the functionality of the second operator. The most expensive method.

B.) Assuming the radar is modular, and it may likely be, you only replace specific parts of the radar. You replace the slotted array with the AESA, and then the back end boxes of the radar. Other parts of the back end are retained. This is cheaper and faster to do, but not as fully optimized as the A.) route.

If you want to commit to the costs of going AESA for your fleet, its best to make it your entire fleet. AESA modules are expensive in small quantity, so you want to make as many of them so you can drive the prices to the floor with volume. That's why I say they should upgrade the J-10B fleet too. The more upgrades you do, the cheaper it becomes for each and every plane.

I hope the PLA goes with route A). 100% AESA or bust!

But you forget that there are only about 55 J-10B whereas there are still several hundred As.

Then it might be an expensive road. Not only will you exchange the radars, but as a complete MLU, you are going to restrengthen the air frame to add more than a decade's life into it, along with new engines.

The question becomes is whether they can do it cheaply, how cheap, how much can they still have money to build more J-20s, will it distract manufacturing resources from building the new jets? Or is there already a facility that has been built to purposedly handle extensive overhauls and MLUs?

and China has seemingly "upped the ante" when it comes to Taiwan, sending a strong message to all who would stand in their way of re-uniting Taiwan with the mainland...

However, I'm rather certain that this will remind those who are committed to keeping things "status quo" in regard to Taiwan, that they need to remain vigilante and maintain an equally strong defensive posture..

so as with all the fun we had during the cold war, it seems we are seeing another "competition" for the hearts and minds of interested parties. Lots going on here, and it does bear watching, though all involved seem to be taking great pains to see that it does NOT get out of hand....
