China Coast Guard and Patrol vessels

the Coast Guard has 390 ships over 20 m length and about 150 boats under 20 m.

In addition there are the vessels of the other non-Navy organizations:
CMS 159 vessels
FLEC 209 vessels
Customes 84 vessels
MSA 370 vessels
Weren't those other 4 organizations folded into the coast guard ? If you do a calculation on those numbers then China's civilian maritime force consist of 1362 boats and ships of all sizes and 163 of them are over 1000 tons.

From what I can gather China's coast guard has 20 ships over 3000 tons and with those 4 Type 818's coming makes it 24.

Beside those 4 Type 818's are there anymore large ships in the pipeline for the Chinese coast guard ?

Does anyone know what the role of the Chinese coast guard will be in times of war ?

Hard to say for China, but.US Navy larger Coast Guard cutters are outfitted with comms, defensive systems, and certain accommodations (space) for potential weapons systems in times of war to perform escort duties and ASW patrols during war time.

This would be the Legend Class (National Security) cutters which displace 4,500 tons, are 418 feet long, of which six have been built and nine are planned.

This will also hold true for the Offshore Patrol Cutters which will be about 3,000 tons, 270 feet long, and of which 25 are planned.

The smaller, 360 ton Sentinel Class (Or Fast Response) Cutters could be used for various near shore patrol and port security duties. 18 of those have been built and 58 are planned.

US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutter, 3,000 tons (25 to build)

Sentinel Class - Fast Response Cutter, 360 tons (18 of 58 built)

The larger cutters already exercise regularly with the US Navy and the Navies of our allies:

I would be very surprised if the Chinese didn't plan to arm and use the Coast Guard cutters in times of war
I agree.

If they have been built with that in mind, then they have numerous vessels that could take up ASW patrols and escort duties in less intense areas, freeing up the naval combatants for the more vulnerable, and more intense duties.

How fast can you train the crews in such a case?

They conduct exercises as we see in the above picture with the US Navy on occasion. My guess is that they would cross deck some Chiefs onto those vessels and expect the sailors to use the training they had along with the direction they would get from some of the old salts they sprinkled in amongst them.

China has decommissioned a lot of old warships like the Type 051 and the Type 053 and also the Type 037. Could it be that those guys who already are sailors and military personnel just simply got some retraining and are now serving on CG cutters ? Where else are they going to get crews so fast to man so many new cutters.

I think that navy needs those people much more than CG.
Both the Navy and the CG have their own training programs. But in the case of these guys that have served on board ships like the Type 051, Type 053 and the Type 037 are not going to do well on board a Type 052D, Type 052C or even a Type 054A. They will need a lot of retraining to do that. Maybe few do get retrained and some will just leave the service but I'm sure that quite a few will end up in the CG. CG cutters are less sophisticated than modern naval warships. So their adjustment will be much smaller and they need experienced crews for the CG cutters.

My read is that the Chinese Navy has still been expanding, as the old ships are being replaced by a larger number of new ships.

In terms of personnel training, it should be the same philosophy as in the army.

Take the best people you have, and then use them as the training cadre / seed crew to teach all the newbies. Rinse and repeat with the newbies who then become the trainers.

I'd say the bigger issue is making sure the Coast Guard ships have a sonar/VDS for ASW work.

Otherwise there's not very much they could do anyway
