They aren't carrying helicopters because they don't need to for this kind of mission. That would be seen offensive and Japanese CG cameras are only waiting for more show to publish it in TV around the world.

What would be seen as offensive; carrying helicopters or having a helicopter fly alongside them?

I agree that having a helicopter fly alongside them would be another small step higher up the escalation chain (though not by much -- it's not like coast guard helicopters are armed), but I don't think the Chinese govt would particularly fear whether the Japanese decide to post it at all, as such a degree of minor escalation would almost definitely be made consciously in response to a perceived preceding escalation by the other side first.

To show the world what? The hideous crime of operating helicopters alongside coast guard vessels? Whether they carry a helicopter or not, the reason will not be because they're camera shy. It's not like their Y-12 has not patrolled the area before.

The Japanese have two that are about as big, the Shikashima class, PLH31 and PLH32. The displace full load close to 10,000 tons. These Chinese vessels displace 12,000 tons.

They are good for very long distance patrols and escort duties and are large enough to provide significant humanitarian aid if necessary.

Specifically, the two Japanese vessels were built to to escort plutonium transport ships travelling from Europe to Japan, for patrol missions by the Yokohama Maritime Safety Department to sail to south-east Asia to fight against piracy in the Strait of Malacca. And, as stated, to make long distance patrols, show the flag, or conduct humanitarian efforts.

I imagine the Chinese have something similar in mind.
