Ugly as hell but might be useful.
Oh, I don't know, I think this is a pretty good looking Coast Guiuard cutter for the Chinese.

...and a smart move too, logistically and cost wise to base it on a hull form being produced in the numbers the Type 056 is.

I actually wish the US Navy had chosen a FF design based on the Berthold Class Coast Guard National Defense Cutter to realize some of the same type of savings.

Are those red characters behind the bridge an LED sign? I've never see that on a ship before. Why does China do that?

All medium and large size CCG cutters have them.

They can display words and characters as a way communicating instructions to boats and ships in contested areas.
